Unraveled Wednesday and a FOX 5/1/24

Good Morning All,

Happy May Day!  I remember way back (in the dark ages) when I was in grade school we always had a May Day celebration where we danced around a Maypole - weaving the streamers around and under.  I wonder if anyone still does that?

It is EARLY here in Eastern PA and I have been awake for some time.  Yuck!  I will back up to last night for the story.  It's maybe 8:30 or so and I'm on the phone talking to my friend Carol.  Suddenly I hear noises outside.  I jump up and go out and right at the edge of the patio is Mr. Fox.  Who was showing me his teeth!  Mabel, fortunately, had jumped up onto some shelves on the patio and was uttering a growl like I have never heard come out of her before.  Mr. Fox ran off and Mabel came inside.  And stayed in the rest of the night.

Jump to 3 a.m. this morning and I wake up to a very loud barking from a fox.  Mabel is on the bed and she starts growling and jumps onto the windowsill to survey the back yard.  I never really get back to sleep - just doze on and off for a bit.  At 5:30 Mabel is getting antsy and the birds are singing loudly outside.  So I get up and come down to let Mabel out.  Usually I would go back upstairs to get a shower, but thankfully I decided to make the coffee first.  Mabel goes out and suddenly I hear a ruckus again.  There is Mr. Fox once more at the edge of the patio (again showing his teeth) and Mabel has managed to get back up on the shelf and is growling (again).  Once more Mr. Fox runs off after giving me a nasty glance and Mabel finally comes inside (where she still is).

This is all too much excitement for me so early in the morning!

Meanwhile, some exciting garden news.  We spotted the first figs forming!!  Last year our fig was very late to leaf out and the fruit did not even form until way too late to ripen.  This year figs were showing before the very first leaves sprouted!

And, we discovered that Mabel loves to lie in the raised bed box under the rhubarb leaves.  LOL. I guess it's a cool and shady spot on these warmer-than-they-should-be days.

All of this brings us to today and Unraveled Wednesday.  Usually I would link up with Kat, but she is on vacation and not hosting an Unraveled Wednesday post this week.  I still wanted to talk knitting and books, so here I am.  The second Peat and Gold sock has been started.  I am a little past the halfway mark on the leg.

I'm hoping to finish this up rather quickly and move onto other things (languishing projects and new stash yarn perhaps).

On the reading side of things, I picked up Notes From the Henhouse the other week.  It's ok.  Not great, but ok...just a little boring in places.  So last night I started another library book - one that my friend Nina had recommended:  This Other Eden by Paul Harding.  I read about 40 pages last night and so far am really loving it.

Another book that Nina recommended is West With Giraffes which Fletch and I are listening to after dinner.  I don't care much for the narrator, but it is a fun story.

I should wrap this up now...get my shower and pour another cup of coffee.  Dee and I are gathering together a bit later this morning!  Thanks for sticking with me through this long-winded post.  Happy Hump Day!

  1. That is definitely too much excitement at 3 am! But I'm excited about your figs and Mabel looks adorable in her shady napping spot. Your peat and gold yarns look perfect together and I hope you can finish them up soon so you can knit all the other things. I am glad to hear that someone else remembers dancing around the May Pole. (The boys think I made this up!)

  2. WAY too much excitement! Good grief, what has got him so worked up about your patio? And teeth? I'm wanting a trail cam on all this -- would be fascinating... Wise Mabel -- raised bed!
That's one inviting sock -- the comfortable cuff in one of my favorite colors.
My aunt suggested West With Giraffes. I have yet to pick it up...sounds like, if I do, I better go hardcopy.
    Enjoy your Dee Time today!

  3. Wow....that's an aggressive fox. The ones we have here are so skittish all you have to do is look at them and they run off. I am so envious of your figs. I had to leave my tree behind when I sold dad's house and it just not fall without making fig jam.

  5. That fox is way too bold!!!! I think that tossing a firecracker up in the air when he visits might discourage him! Give Mabel a hug from me! The socks look great, btw!

  6. I remember dancing around the May Day pole, too. And my Nana would always hang flowers on the door knob of our front door and hide a May basket in the yard. I looked forward to it every year! I hope Mabel and Mr. Fox can reach a truce so you can get some sleep.

  7. I guess Mabel is doing a good job of defending her house! I'm glad there were no tussles with Mr. Fox.

I also danced around a May Pole years ago and just wondered on Bonny's blog if people still did it!

  8. Wow. I hope Mabel can stay away from that fox. Our neighbors had a dog that was severely injured by the neighborhood fox. The dog survived but not without a lot of stitches and antibiotics. Too much excitement for sure. A second sock is a good thing and yours looks great.

  10. Love your yarn bowl.
Hope Mr Fox clears off for good!
Thanks for the West with Giraffes book recommendation, it sounds great!

  11. Oh, look at your pretty lilies-of-the-valley -- mine are only just starting to form buds. Can't wait until they open.

ADVENTURES WITH A FOX!! Wow. He/she is kind of persistent!

And your figs! That must make you so happy (I know I would be!).

I gave that giraffe book to someone in a swap a few years ago... seemed like a fun story to read (I haven't yet), and giraffes are my favorite animal!

  12. Mabel among the rhubarb reminds me of JoJo among the hostas! They know the coolest, shadiest places to hang out in the garden, that's for sure! XO

  13. My Lily-of-the-Valley isn't quite blooming yet. I found a clump quite far from the original group, so I think some helpful critters have been spreading it for me. When its done blooming, I need to dig it all up and move it to the Woodland garden.

Mabel is so pretty - and clearly has had enough of Mr. Fox in HER territory!

  14. I'm playing blog catch up this afternoon. I'm sure glad that Mabel knows how to outwit Mr. Fox. I hope her luck continues. She does look happy under the rhubarb.
    That sock is great!
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  15. I've heard those types of growls/screams and they are very upsetting. What a night you had. That fox sounds like it will not give up and stalk Mabel. Oh those little figgy bumps are enviable. One of my trees croaked from cold (when?) and the other is coming back with three leaves. Will I ever get a fig? Nope.

  16. My sock knitting has waned... (all knitting, if you must know!) I barely knit 3 rounds the entire time away! And I don't think there will be much knitting this week... the garden is calling, and then there's those book pages to get together!

  17. West with Giraffes is a lovely story. I read it, then my book group picked it. Sorry the narrator is not doing it justice.
