Weekending 3/27/23

 Good Morning Everyong,

Whew!  I feel as though I've been drugged.  I just woke up not even 30 minutes ago (just had one sip of coffee so far) - I slept last night for 11 hours!  And it felt great.  I was knitting after dinner and my eyes kept closing, so I tried reading and the same thing happened, so I went to bed at 8:30 p.m.  Mabel didn't even bother me because she had gone out before Fletch came up to bed.  All I can say is I guess I needed it!

How was your weekend?  Mine was very nice.  My brother and SIL who live in DE were supposed to come up on Saturday, but we changed that to Sunday due to the weather forecast.  So, I was able to meet up with Dee as usual for our get-together session.  And man, the rain poured down (after we arrived).  It was bouncing in the parking lot.  By the time we were ready to say our goodbyes, the rain had thankfully passed by.  The temps had plummeted somewhat though and it was quite chilly.

We woke to very sunny skies on Sunday.  Still on the chilly side, but beautiful.  I tried out my new waffle maker and I LOVE it - works perfectly.  This is the one I got.  I love that the plates come out to be washed.  Once breakfast was over I prepped some food and got ready for Ray & Linda to arrive.  We had not seen them in 2.5 years (not since Colin & Mailing's wedding)!  Ray, my brother, is really into BIG trees and I've wanted to show him the giant sycamore tree in Valley Forge that Colin & Mailing had shown to us a few years back.

So, we drove to a parking lot in Oaks and then walked down the trail to this beauty of a specimen.

(Please click to enlarge)

He was suitably impressed!  He measured the circumference of the tree (I forget what the measurement was, but huge!!) and said the tree is most likely over 400 years old!  We had heard that the tree was around when Washington was in Valley Forge.  I love the lower branches that come way out onto the grass and just run along.  It's almost like they are too heavy for the tree to support them above the ground.

You can see what a pretty day it was.  At that point (late morning) it was pretty chilly out still with a strong breeze.  This interesting vehicle was in the parking area.

(I kept humming Yellow Submarine, but obviously it's not)

We had a nice meal together around 1:00 and then they took off just before 3 p.m.  It's not the nicest drive between our houses (using Route 95, the Blue Route in PA, etc.) and drivers are CRAZY these days.

My day today will be filled with trying not to feel groggy!  I've got a library book to drop off and one is waiting for me to pick up.  It is bright and sunny out which is nice (still on the cool side - only 35 degrees right now).  Maybe I'll be able to get a walk in at some point!

Cheers to the week ahead - hope yours is a good one (mine too!!).

  2. This sounds like a lovely weekend and a really great night's sleep! I haven't been to Valley Forge since I was a kid, but I should come down some weekend and wander around. That tree is impressive, and I wonder if you could start new trees from the spiky seed balls? I'm glad I don't have to make that drive down 95 to DE anymore!

  3. Oh my, what a tree! It's an incredible specimen. Thank you for posting the photo. How fantastic. As you know, I'm a Tree Person, too.

  4. That is a magnificent tree!

I'm glad you had a good weekend. We had heavy rain Saturday too - some points so heavy you could barely see across the street! And the wind was insane - we were coming back from Strathroy on and one of the country road, there was a tree fallen across the road. Thankfully, it was only across one lane so we could get around it. It was a monster or we would have moved it ourselves. It was gone by Sunday so I imagine the county came out pretty quick to clean it up.

  7. The yellow vehicle is interesting. I’ve been pondering how the driver would get in and most importantly- out! Is Ray the brother who was quite ill a few years ago?

  8. We had an Amber alert go off at 12:30 waking everyone up. It was hard to get back to sleep so I'm pretty much sleep walking through today.
That tree reminds me of the two huge black walnuts we had out back when we first moved it. Two back to back hurricanes coming up the bay took them out. Irene and Isabelle. It was so sad. I used to call them grandmother and grandfather because they were so old and gnarly. Their trunks are still laying out there because that wood was so thick and so hard we couldn't saw it up to move it.

  9. I'd rather have had rain than the 16" or so inches of snow we got on Saturday!! Sounds like a very nice weekend, Vera!

  10. I don't think I've ever slept 11 hours ever, unless I was ill with fever. It was a nice day yesterday but now it's cold brr. I am loving all of my knitting projects so far, and that is wonderful!

  11. 11 hours is impressive! I got something like 8.5 Friday night/Saturday and felt like I'd been drugged -- but clearly I needed it! I'm glad to hear you had nice visits with Dee and your brother and sister in law.

  13. Beautiful tree! Don’t you just think when there is a tree of that age of all the life that has passed below those limbs!?!?!? Clearly you needed the 💤 (sleep).

  14. That is quite a tree. I love those huge trees that sprawl along the ground. I'm glad you had such a good night of sleep. It has taken me longer to regroup after this last time change. What a nice weekend.

  15. Your weekend sounds like a lot of fun. I would love to see that tree sometime. Our weekend was gorgeous on Saturday with57F and then 7 inches of snow Saturday night! Craziness. It's mostly gone now except in the piles where it was plowed up.
Tomorrow I have several doctor appointments with Mom and we're going out to lunch too while we're out. Fun times galore.
    Blessings and hugs,
    Betsy
