Masquerade

Hello Everyone,

Finally it seems that the winds have calmed down.  But, we are back to grey, gloomy weather and rain is in the forecast.  No walking since Sunday!  Which has me in a bit of a fit...but, I experience pretty severe ear aches in wind and I don't find it pleasant to walk when it is in the 40's and damp.  But, I found other things to do!

Like make masks!  I've been making do with using bandanas and I am really fine with that, but I thought I had some elastic in my stash and I have some very pretty fabrics.  So....

I found the elastic.  It must have come from my Mom's sewing things (buttons, spools of thread, snaps, etc.).

Look at that!  29 cents for this elastic at Woolworth's no less.  Woolworth's hasn't been in business since???  Showing this card to Fletch made him remember his Mom giving him $0.25 to shop at Woolworth's when they would go to downtown Norfolk.  He said he could get a little metal car and some plastic dinosaurs with that quarter and sometimes even have a bit of change!!  Those were the days.  I used to love going to Woolworth's.

Anyway I made two masks, both the same.  Different fabrics on each side.

I will fix the first one I made today.  It is too loose for me and Fletch tried it last night and it's too loose for him.  I'll just open it up and trim off some of the elastic.  I love both of these fabrics and I have many more pieces of different fabrics that will make great masks.  However, not much elastic left...and I'm sure none to be found anywhere.

Meanwhile, it is Thursday and I have a bunch of financial reports to run and send out, so I'd best get started (thankful for my large monitor this morning!).  Have a wonderful Thursday!

  1. Hello, I like your pretty birdie mask. I used some of my ponytail holders on the masks I made. The wind really bothers my eyes. Take care, wishing you a happy day!

  2. Not being able to walk outside has to be frustrating.
The mask will need some tweaking but you'll get it--love the fabrics!

  4. I've procrastinated making masks because John and I have some from when we put fiberglass insulation in the house in MD. But Ryan, Justin, and other family members need them, so I think today might be the day. I got out my tiny fabric stash and ponytail holders (no elastic here), and will give it a try. Thanks for the inspiration!

  5. I'm surprised that old elastic still has any stretch in it!

I have fond memories of Woolworths when I was a very little girl. My mother--who did not drive (and we didn't have a second car anyway)--would take me on the bus downtown to pay bills and run errands. We would stop at the lunch counter at Woolworth's for a cheap snack. I always got the cubes of Jello in a dish with whipped cream. They were so pretty!

  6. I get earaches when it's windy out too. I hate it.

  7. I loved Woolworths when I was a kid. We used to eat at the lunch counter. Egg salad sandwiches and a hot fudge sundae. It was my grandmother's favorite outing.

  8. Woolworths was a great store. I loved going to the basement and looking at the toys. If I was lucky my Mom would buy me a cherry coke at the fountain. Elastic is impossible to find, so I used fabric ties for the masks I made.

  9. It's been raining here for a couple of days too so no walking for me either. The elastic I made masks from was from my Mom's stash too and she died 31 years ago! The very first place I ever "ate out" from was Woolworths lunch counter. My Mom and I would take the bus downtown and do the shopping with lunch at Woolworths. It was such a treat and I looked forward to it so much.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  10. The birdie fabric is really cute.

There used to be a Woolworth's in Hatboro. Got all my really cheap makeup there when I was a teen.

  11. I like your mask material, especially the bird one! I too have a lot of notions that I inherited from my mother. All with unbelievably low price tags.

  13. I have to make a few more, trying the fitted ones next. I can't see the floor, my feet, my purse. Nothing I can do to make the nose smaller but maybe the mask tighter!

  14. Good job on making 2 masks. A lady down the road made ours but the elastic is too short and it won't stay on which really diminishes its effectiveness! Have a wonderful, relaxing weekend. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  16. When I would stay with my grandmother in Plymouth Michigan our big trip was to go to Woolworth's and pick out a toy and have a hot chocolate up at the drink counter. It was so exiting! Those were the days I made family and friends, I think I might officially be closed now!

  17. By the time I started making masks, I could not get elastic. I found a little card similar to yours with the same kind of elastic on it. Mine looked like it came from the '60s or '70s. Just imagine, it's just been sitting in someone's sewing box all that time until we needed it now. God is good.
This is my first time to visit your blog. Be blessed!

  18. I hope you get some sunshine. It does lift the spirits. Isn't it a kick to find some old supplies with those prices. There was a Woolworth's Dime Store in the town where I grew up. They had candy in bulk and a fabulous counter of nail polishes. My sis and I walked downtown bought some candy and nail polish and then walked home pleased as punch.

  19. I grew up a couple counties north of Norfolk, VA...missed on the Woolworth's. I do remember one of the department stores in Hampton still with a fabric and yarn section (Sears or Penney's probably), Mom made me some a couple of tunics using paisley fabric from there, mid-70s.

I missed getting elastic, even the foldover kind. However I found some cotton/lycra jersey in my stash. Cut 1 inch wide strips from selvedge to selvedge, then cut about 14 or 15 inch lengths, pull so they curl in, and use those for earloops. I just tie knots, to make them the right length. 5 people here, all different sizes, plus several mailed to my Mom, she's too far away to fit the ear loops but she can tie the knots. I've also made two bigger batches for one of my husband's clients (48 all told), same ear loop ties. No complaints to date, or requests for long ties, either.
