Happy Friday!

 Hello All,

Finally we received some glorious rain last evening!  It started sprinkling around 4:15, but that didn't last long.  Once again we figured the storms would go to the North or South of us.  But sometime after dinner it started raining, and raining hard!  Within a little over an hour we had received an inch of rain.  The scent was wonderful - Petrichor!!!  Most welcome.  This morning is a little overcast at the moment and the air is noticeably cooler.  Also welcome.

Dinner last night was good too.  We had crab quiche which I usually only make in the winter (specifically it is our New Year's Eve dinner with a salad and champagne).

This time though we had fresh garden tomatoes sliced to go with the quiche.  This quiche also had the addition of garden basil and garden parsley.  So fresh and so good.  A little taste of heaven.  Bonus - lots of leftovers.

For a change of pace, Fletch and I started an audio book after dinner.  We started listening to Northland by Porter Fox - a book about our border with Canada.  However, neither one of us is thrilled with the narrator (weird voice), so I don't know if we can or will continue.  Most likely we will give it another shot tonight and see how that goes.  While listening, I was knitting and voila!  Fletcher's second sock was completed.  And I present Cafe Au Lait socks:

These were knit with DPNs (size 2) using Hermione's Everyday Socks pattern (free on Rav) on the leg; Eye of the Partridge heel flaps and a plain foot.  The yarn is from Youghiogheny Yarns (85% superwash merino and 15% nep) bought at the NJ Sheep and Wool festival and the colorway is "Cafe Au Lait."  They are nice and squishy and I'm betting that Fletch has them on his feet soon (he's been wearing hand knit socks with his sneakers all summer!).

I feel as though my weekend has already begun - my conference calls were cancelled again, so my Friday is pretty free.  The weekend is looking good:  I have plans to meet up with Dee tomorrow morning for coffee, knitting and chatting.  On Sunday Bonnie & Zhongren (Mailing's parents) are coming over for dinner (this is the get together that was cancelled when I had vertigo).  It will be pretty warm, so dinner will be fairly simple (and cool).  Fletch will grill a couple of pork loins and I am making Tabbouleh, a marinated (cold) eggplant dish, and a salad with nectarines, mushrooms and black olives.  That last one sounds so weird, but it is really rather good - a recipe from my ex SIL.  Bonnie is bringing dessert.

Today I am hoping to find the time to cast on for a new pair of socks or, perhaps, a shawl.  Time will tell.  No other plans though and that's just how I like it!  Enjoy your weekend!!

  1. Congrats on the sock finish! That quiche looks delicious. The Mister was just asking for quiche the other night when he forgot we STILL don't have a working oven. We've got to get back on that issue before it cools down. I need some fresh baked bread to go with all this soup I've been making in the crockpot.

  2. I am so glad to hear you finally got some rain! We had it off and on all day yesterday -- it was such weird weather because it was sunny one minute and pouring the next. The socks look fantastic and I hope Fletch likes them! Enjoy all the get-togethers this weekend!

I'm intrigued by the salad you mentioned. I cannot imagine those ingredients tasting good together! I trust you, however; your taste is so like mine.

  9. Hmm. I wonder why this just showed up in my blog reader today. I’ve never made a quiche, but I have enjoyed it in restaurants. Some narrator’s/reader’s voices detract from the audiobook. I’ve returned several without finishing because I couldn’t stand a quality in the voice.

  10. The voice is a make or break with audio books for me, too! The socks are fantastic! Nice finish. You have to have socks on the needles!
