Weekending July 18, 2022

 Good Morning!

How are you?  I am so much better!  My vertigo seems to have flown the coop, thank God.  I was still a bit dizzy Saturday morning, but managed to (finally) take a shower (leaning into the wall a lot).  I did very little in the morning and after lunch took a nap (so sleepy).  And then, BINGO!  I woke from my nap and had no dizziness or unsteadiness.  Vertigo was gone!  And it has stayed gone!!  I really do appreciate everyone's well wishes and emails.  I'm looking forward to getting back to reading blogs!

I hope everyone had a good weekend.  Mine was ok.  Not as planned, but ok.  I cancelled my plans to meet with Dee Saturday morning.  On Sunday, Bonnie and Zhongren (Mailing's parents) were going to come over for dinner and we postponed them till the 31st.

One thing I did do on Saturday morning was to harvest a few things from the garden!  Our first bell pepper and a few jalapenos and our first cherry tomatoes:

This year we grew beets for the first time and they were erupting through the soil, so I plucked them as well:

We had beets and beet greens for dinner on Saturday.  The beets were so sweet and tasty.  Surprisingly, I did not care for the greens at all, but Fletch enjoyed them.  I love kale, Swiss chard, collards, all kinds of greens and was really looking forward to the beet greens, but c'est la vie.  I've pickled the leftover beets, and am curious to see how those turned out.

Yesterday I had a mess to clean up!  I was planning to make falafel for dinner and wanted to make baba ghanoush to go along with it.  The recipe I was using stated to broil the eggplants for 15-20 minutes, turning once or twice.  Well, at 12 minutes I heard a pop and checked out what was going on.  My eggplant had basically exploded and there were eggplant "guts" all over my oven.  LOL  It really was rather comical.  I took out the eggplant, turned the exhaust fan on high, opened the oven door all the way and then left to do some errands!  When I got back I buckled down and cleaned the oven (which was much easier than I had anticipated).  The eggplant was salvageable (though my baba ghanoush is not nearly as good as Colin & Mailing's) and dinner was prepared later on.

Today I'm heading to the office early.  I have a number of things I want/need to print and some things I need to overnight to Kevin.  I'll make a quick stop at Trader Joe's for a few things and be home well before lunch.  I hope to find time to knit and/or stitch today.  I sure missed that while the vertigo was going on.

Look what I  found when I picked up a bottle of wine the other day:

I have not tried them yet, but they sure looked yummy to me for a hot day!

OK, time to get another cup of coffee, wake Fletch and get ready to head to the office.  Hope everyone has a wonderful week!

  1. Okay. I'm really wanting a Freeze-a-Rita!!! You'll have to report back on how they taste. :-) I'm so glad your vertigo has disappeared, Vera. I always think it's so weird . . . the way it just appears . . . and then disappears again. XO

  2. I'm glad your vertigo is gone and you can back to normal! A friend brought some of those frozen margarita popsicles over a little while ago and I was disappointed. They barely had any taste and were sort of bitter. They weren't Rita's brand, so I'm hoping yours taste much better!

  3. Your little harvest looks delicious! I had to laugh at your eggplant adventure. Sounds like something I would Those pops look like just the thing for this heat wave. I put in an order for some tonic and some limes in my grocery pick up. I've got gin and tonics on my mind.

  4. Woo hoo for vanished vertigo!! And I cringed at the exploding eggplant clean up... oy!

But... Freeze-a-Rita?? Added to my list! LOL

  5. I wonder if you could prick the eggplant with a fork a bit and avoid that explosion next time. What a messy surprise. Cleaning the oven is no fun.

We're still waiting for our jalapenos--we put them in a bit late--and no one around here has any tomatoes! Sweet corn just became available at farm stands.

Enjoy your margarita freeze pops. I'm so glad your vertigo is gone!

  6. I'm so glad you can say goodbye to the vertigo! Phew! The secret to enjoying beet greens is to cook them with the beets with a big clove of garlic in the pan--delicious. (it causes a chem reaction with the greens and makes them sweet!)

  7. Glad you are feeling better.

Oh gahhhhhhhhhhh about the oven. That's has to be one of the worst jobs. You have to be a contortionist to get that back wall.

    See you on Saturday.

  8. Not THIS Saturday ...................I know. The NEXT one. Fingers faster than head this morning.

  9. Sometimes you need a weekend with no official plans. I know I do. And I won't get one until the week AFTER next.
glad to hear the vertigo is gone though.

  10. Hooray for the exit of vertigo! It's such an awful feeling and I'm glad you are better. Your harvest looks great and your eggplant story made me laugh. We picked our first cucumbers this weekend but our tomatoes are still very green.

  11. I am so glad to hear the the vertigo has disappeared. I did my first harvest a few days ago too. Mine wasn't as much as yours, but still exciting since I haven't had a garden for a few years and this one is so tiny.
Hope the day continues to go well for you and thankful the cleanup was easier than you thought it would be. :-)

  12. It’s rare for Laramie temperatures to be in the 90s, but they were all weekend and probably will be most of the coming week. I don’t do well in heat. I’m glad you’re feeling better.

  13. Glad to hear the vertigo is gone! I'm also jealous of your garden harvest -- my pepper plants were doing so well and then rabbits (I assume) ate all the leaves! I noticed that some new leaves are starting to grow, but I'm not sure there's enough time left in the growing season to actually get some peppers. At least my tomatoes are doing well!

Did you get the Freeze-a-Ritas at the state store?

  14. Glad you're over the dizzies. Never tried beet greens, we always pickled the beets. But kale? I think you're the only person I know that likes it!!

  15. Look at your garden produce. I love it when fresh veggies come straight from the garden. I'm glad the vertigo is gone. I had to smile at your eggplant explosion. Yikes, I bet it was a bit of a mess.
