Weekending 1/20/25

 Good Morning!

Pretty chilly here (11 when I looked at my phone earlier), but not as cold as Boulder, CO.  My brother texted me that it was -7 at his house yesterday morning!

So, what has been happening?  I was at the King of Prussia Mall twice in the past 4 days.  This is a place I have not been to for at least a decade!!  But, necessity demanded a visit.  I (finally) got an iPhone and needed to pick it up at the Apple Store.  Then we ditched cable on Friday but could not get our TV hooked up to our new internet (we had to upgrade that...of course...), so we bought an AppleTV to hook up and that seems to be working.  Eliminating cable has not saved us very much $$$ (we are now streaming Hulu plus live TV) because our internet fee went from $35 to $100.  It's all a game and I don't enjoy playing it at all.  Bottom line:  I hope I don't need to go back to the mall...ever...!!

Then on Saturday mid-day, I received a text from our neighbor Rob with this picture:

Fresh out of the oven and he wanted to know if we wanted one.  They are either round loaves or gigantic rolls!  LOL. And they are a combination of sourdough, rye and whole wheat.  I replied "you bet" and within 5 minutes Rob was walking into our house with one of these beauties.  We ended up having part of it last night with bowls of chili and it is delicious!

(For those of you who have read "The Serviceberry" by Robin Wall Kimmerer, Rob's sharing reminded me of that book.)

Sunday started off chilly and damp feeling.  We were expecting a "big" snow and it finally started around 11 a.m. and continued to snow most of the day.

We ended up with maybe 3" or so...maybe a little more (I did not go out to measure).  You can see in the bottom left of the photo where Fletch had shoveled a path out to our bird feeder hanging on the clothesline.  Gotta keep our avian friends well fed in this weather!  Our temps are forecast to dip into the single digits overnight for the next 3 nights or so.

My plan for today is to stay inside and do some knitting and stitching, some reading and perhaps a little napping.  If I get motivated or ambitious, I may try to do something with my recipes (organizing would be a good idea) or my knitting and stitching supplies.  Sometimes it is easier to just close my eyes and mumble "another day."

Please stay warm if you are in the path of this deep freeze.  We have food to keep us going for days which is a nice feeling!

  1. It's freezing here. It's -16C. Dave keeps a path to the feeders clear for me too! We have to go out tonight to get more salt - we had a brief warm up on Saturday and now all our snow has a nice ice layer on top - Dave almost fell getting something from my Jeep yesterday.
    Stay warm!

  2. I hope you don't have to go back to the mall anytime soon! We got about the same amount of snow (maybe a little more) between Thursday and yesterday. Now it's just freezing cold; I'm waiting to see if Molly's school will close the next two days, when we're supposed to have lows in the negative territory without wind chill.

I hope you can have a relaxing day today and you all stay warm. It's a good day for knitting, stitching, and napping!

  3. We're pretty cold here too so I don't plan to go outside except to take Zoey out. Last I checked it was -19 F with the wind chill. Without the windchill factored in, it's supposed to be -12 F tonight. Yikes! I'm ready for spring. At least we didn't get your snow.
I'm crocheting a baby blanket so will probably watch the inauguration and crochet today.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  4. Going to the mall twice in four days is more than enough! I hope everything works now and you can start saving some money. (I would like to know how your internet was only $35!) We got 5 or 6" of snow and I'm keeping the feeders filled. I hope you have an enjoyable and warm day whatever you do!

  5. Rusty & I are in South Carolina — escaping the polar vortex that’s happening at home in Wisconsin right now! Yikes… -6F this morning there, feeling like -26! But there’s a chill even down here, and a winter storm warning late tomorrow into Wednesday. We cut the cable at home probably 10 years ago, or so, and I’ve rarely missed it. Things have changed a lot since then with streaming, too, and I may have saved a little money for a while, but doubt that I am anymore. I am in control, though, and regularly pause/cancel streaming services. Stay warm & cozy, Vera!

  6. Oh, ugh, the mall. I hope you don't have to go back any time soon! It's cold here but not like in some parts of the country and we did get about 4 inches of snow last night. It's pretty to look at and I'm glad to not have to go to work!

  7. It's even cold out here in the PNW!

  8. We've already reached our high here today of 11. I had to go out to the doctor this morning and the crunch of our new snow was so loud!

Navigating internet/streaming services now is like playing whack a mole. You think you're getting a good deal, but then they raise the price. And where I live, there's only one choice of internet provider, so we're stuck.

  9. We only got a dusting of yesterday's storm but it did turn everything white again. It's icy out there right now. You need a pair of ice skates to get up our driveway.
I tried to cut the cable cord too and am not happy. I miss my TCM and Dateline. I didn't even think that I wouldn't be able to watch SNL or the Tour de France this summer. There's only so much you can watch on Netflix and Apple TV. Having said that, I am reading more which I suppose is a good thing.

  10. I would love to get rid of cable. I only watch vintage reruns, discovery, and history. Hubs watches golf, football, hockey, and Josh Gates, but we don't know what we could get through internet. Too lazy to look!!

  11. You have a very thoughtful neighbor. The internet and TV and cable is such a game. Stay warm. We have no snow but this is the third day of near zero temps during the day. Thank goodness for wool and central heating.

  12. "in the belly of my neighbor"... sweetest words ever strung together! I do so love dear Robin Wall Kimmerer! We cut cable a while ago, but I am not sure we saved much either because "stand alone" internet is not cheap. Sigh. Stay warm indeed... it is bitterly cold here!

  13. we cut cable over ten years ago, we love it! I am hibernating as the weather is much too cold to be outside. Today is supposedly the last day of the bitter cold. We shall see!!
