Unraveled Wednesday 6/8/22

 Hello and Good Morning!

Yesterday's work BBQ turned out to be a lovely event!  Longer than I expected, but very nice.  The food was excellent:  a raw bar, some shrimp cocktail, little cheesesteak eggrolls, jalapeno poppers, bowls of fresh fruit and then set up outside the usual BBQ fare:  Caesar salad, macaroni salad, potato salad, Mexican street corn, hot dogs, burgers, ribs, chicken, black bean burgers and all the fixings to go on top.  Dessert was make your own sundaes with Ben & Jerry's ice cream.  The tables were beautifully decorated with black and white checked tablecloths and each table had a centerpiece:

Gorgeous flowers!  Everyone received a spot bonus and in addition, I won a $200 gift card in a raffle!  I'd say it was a good day - LOL

Bobby said in no unclear terms that he has no intention of bringing everyone back to the office full time.  YAY!!  The whole "working at home" thing is working out perfectly.  He will probably bring us together quarterly for these "events" which would be nice.  We are stuck with our lease until 2024, but after that they will most likely downsize considerably and move to a smaller location (I don't plan to be working by then anyway).

And that, my friends, brings us to Wednesday morning and Unraveled Wednesday where we link up with Kat and her Merry Band of Unravelers to talk making and reading.  Much to my surprise and delight, I have a finish to share!!

My Guernsey Wrap is finished.  Not blocked yet (obviously), but bound off and ends woven in.  I'm trying to figure out where I'm going to block it!  Right now it measures about 14.5" by 65" and the instructions are to block to roughly 18.5" by 85" which is pretty large!  The bind off was a new one to me.  I did the recommended Sewn bind off which was easy, fast and reminded me of the Kitchener stitch.

I absolutely love this piece.  Knit in Wool of the Andes yarn by KnitPicks (colorway is Mink Heather), it is so soft around my neck.  I know this will be in use constantly come winter - perfect for wrapping around my shoulders in my home office.

I also finished a book!  Surprise, surprise.  I read Olympus Texas by Stacey Swann.  This novel takes place over a span of several days - maybe a week? and the lives of everyone are upended and torn apart.  The book was entertaining, though at times I felt like I was reading Peyton Place - LOL.  There were places where it dragged a bit for me, but overall it was a quick read...a good summer book.

After that I started The Brother Gardeners wihch I was really looking forward to...but it was way too dry for me and I returned it to the library.  The other night I started Meet Me At The Museum and am enjoying it (only 40 pages or so in at this point).  This is by Anne Youngson who wrote "The Narrowboat Summer" which I enjoyed last year.

Well, that's a wrap for Unraveled Wednesday.  I've a bunch of chores and errands I need/want to do today in addition to the normal work stuff.  Our weather keeps shifting from sunny to cloudy - I need to see if rain is expected or not.  I'd love to get a walk in if I can.  Hope this mid-week post finds you all doing well and having a good week!

  1. It's great to hear that you aren't going to be expected to return to the office full-time! It sounds like Bobby is a smart person who trusts his employees. And a BBG and $200 help make for a nice Tuesday event!

Your Guernsey wrap is quite lovely and so nice to have come winter. Congratulations on a very nice finish!

  2. All good things in this post. Your barbecue sounds lavish and quite the event. I'd have had a hard time not eating every single thing.

Bravo on your finish of the Guernsey Wrap. It's your opus. I can't wait to see it blocked (probably shot as a panoramic photo!) and modeled.

You have such a treasure as a boss. He really understands the modern business model and worker productivity/happiness link. I wish there were many, many more like him.

  3. I can't wait to see your scarf blocked... I think blocking just makes stitch patterns so incredible! :)

And YAY for not returning to the office! I am off to find Meet Me at the Museum! Thank you :)

  4. Your company sounds like it does an excellent job of making its employees know they are appreciated! Who doesn't like a delicious free lunch, plus a bonus, plus a gift card? I'm excited to see your Guernsey Wrap blocked and (please?) modeled. I have no real sense of its size because it looks tiny in the photos, which I know is just a trick of perspective.

  5. How wonderful for you that you don't have to return to a stuffy office. SIL is also still working at home which is working out perfectly with the new baby. When he has important zoom meetings he just takes him over to his mom's so she can play with him until the meeting is over and she is thrilled to do it. He sets up his computer right there at her house so he never has to leave the baby making Daughter's long day at the ice rink worry free.

  7. My goodness that sounds like quite a lunch! Your boss sounds like a very generous person who appreciates his employees. What a great place to work. Now you can afford more yarn! Just the work from home part would do it for me.
The guernsey wrap will be even more beautiful when blocked. I can just imagine the sense of accomplishment you must feel to have it done. I can't wait to see it when it's the completed size.
I hope you're having a great day and are able to get your walk in. We had thunderstorms that lasted several hours into the night last night but the rain is very welcome.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  9. I loved The Narrowboat Summer, so I'm interested in hearing what you think of Meet Me at the Museum! Your Guernsey Wrap is just lovely. It seems to have been a pretty quick knit (at least from my vantage point). So glad you'll be able to continue working remotely, Vera! That's such a nice option -- and it works so well for you. Hurray! XO

  10. I’m sure a lot of companies will change to smaller buildings and the majority of employees working remotely on a permanent basis. Love your Guernsey Wrap. I hope you can find a good place to block it.

  13. Something similar has happened with my office - quite a few of us were already working from home at least half the time, so when everything shut down, it was almost seamless for us. Their lease was up last year, and we used to take up three full floors of the building we were in - but they downsized to two. Now there are a whole bunch of work stations that you have to book ahead of time if you want to come to the office.

Obviously, I won't be doing that, living 2.5 hours away now. But I did check with my boss before we bought the house. He said as long as I'm in a North American time zone, I can live wherever I want. He's located in Buffalor, NY, and the office I was supposed to be in was Toronto, ON.... so it's not like he was used to physically supervising us anyway.

Those centre pieces are pretty.. its funny, I'm not a fan of hydrangeas in a garden, but I love them in little bouquets.

Your wrap looks great, even unblocked. That will be so nice to wrap around your shoulders in the cooler weather. I love my hemlock for that, or just tossing over my lap.
