Oh My! Delicious!!

 Hello My Friends,

Stopping by with a quick, but delicious, post.  Yesterday I made the Espresso Dark Chocolate Brownies to take over to C&M's for dinner.  I'm not sure I can even describe just how good these brownies are.  Dangerously good!

A little sprinkle of sea salt never hurts.  Colin made some whipped cream to top the brownies and that was perfect (ice cream would have worked also).

This Recipe is the one I used.  Highly recommend.

Also, Colin's pasta with a veggie sauce was excellent!  The weather was pretty much crap (constant rain or at least mist) so we skipped a fire and came home early.  That ended up being a good thing.  I was pretty tired.  I had picked up two library books earlier in the day, so I started one last night - more about that next week.

More rain in the forecast for today.  Again, I won't complain - we still need it.  But gosh it is awfully dark outside!  A perfect morning for crawling back into bed...but I need to head back over to watch Iris in a bit.  Hope your Thursday is a good one!

Weekending 7/14/25

 Good Humid Morning!

How are you?  I'm feeling a bit on the soggy side.  It's hot.  It's humid.  It's muggy.  And, guess what?  It's summer!  July is just about half over (which is so friggin hard to believe - how did that happen?).

My weekend was good and I hope yours was too.  I did enjoy having last week off from babysitting Iris.  I missed her, but I relished having time during the days to do things.  Today I'm back on the babysitting gig, but Bonnie (Mailing's Mom) and I are splitting up the weeks.  One week I'll do three days and she will do two; the next week I will take two days and she will have three, etc., etc.  The next 3 weeks are worked out and we will figure out August as well.  I'll be back to full time during September when Bonnie is going back to China for a month to visit family.

Anyway, I didn't do a whole lot on the weekend.  I did bake zucchini bread on Friday.  Yum!!

One loaf was wrapped and put in the freezer for another time.  I was going to make bluebarb (blueberry and rhubarb) jam, but I decided not to.  Who wants to stand over a stove cooking jam and then have a huge kettle of boiling water ready to plunge the filled jars?  With no central air, it has been simply too hot to do that.  I may still make that jam, but not this week!

A lot of time was spent stitching (update tomorrow) and some knitting (update Wednesday) and reading (update on Wednesday).  After reading Carole's post about her camping week I decided to try a "Savvy B" that she had mentioned.  Simple:  add some jalapeƱo slices to a glass of sauvignon blanc.  Very tasty!  And quite refreshing on a warm, humid day.

Yesterday for dinner I made the Chinese Chicken Salad that Bonny shared in her post on Friday.  I subbed arugula for the lettuce, but otherwise made the recipe as written.  Delicious!  And, lots of leftovers too.  A great dinner for a hot summer night.

Time for me to pour another cup of coffee and get ready for the day.  Here's hoping your Monday is a good one.

Weekending 6/9/25

 Good Morning!

June 9th already and another grey and damp Monday.  Rain is in the forecast for several days.  Then a quick break.  And then more rain!  One of the pepper plants that Fletch put in the other week already has 3 peppers on it!  That's fast.

Last night as Fletch and I finished dinner, I glanced out back and "our deer" was back at rest by the tree my clothesline is tied to.

Such a sweetie.  She did not move when I stepped outside to get this picture.

Anyway...how was your weekend?  Mine was a very good mixture.  I ran some errands, took care of domestic chores and also found some "me" time for stitching and knitting.  Can't complain about that.  I also did some cooking on Saturday.  First I made one of my favorite summer salads - pasta with a ton of different veggies chopped up and everything dressed in EVOO,  S&P.  Yum!  And I made a peach crostata!

It turned out well and today I'm taking half of it over to C&M.  There is still some in the frig for Fletch to have.

Fletch discovered The Mountain Detective on PBS and it's pretty good.  I've only seen one episode so far.  The scenery is amazing.  Because it is in French with subtitles, it's not really something I can knit to.  I'm thinking some of you might enjoy this show.

Time for me to fix another cup of coffee.  Here's hoping this Monday finds you all doing very well.

Lemon Raspberry Muffins and Poetry!

 Good Morning!

Last night I baked some lemon raspberry muffins.  I used a new-to-me recipe and I hope they are good...I have not yet tried one.

Our friends/neighbors Rob & Eva are back from their trip to Colorado and I wanted to bake something to welcome them home and to thank them for the multiple servings of asparagus we had from their garden.  I thought they were coming home today, but actually they came home last night, so I've texted that I will leave some on their porch later this morning when I head over to Colin & Mailing's (and I will take some to C&M as well).

Plummeting down rabbit holes this morning, I came across this poem and just love it.  I hope you do too.

THE WISDOM OF A MUFFIN

it is extreme heat

in a tight spot

that makes the muffin rise

to show its purpose

to give delight

to be useful to others

then why is it

that when we feel the heat

and when we are in a tight spot

we show our weakness

we give complaints

and we become useless to others

it is perchance

that the wisdom of the muffin

that rises to the occasion

that stands up to be counted

trumps our own?

Unraveled Wednesday 4/2/25

 Hello My Friends,

The heat is back on in our house.  Yup.  It's a chilly morning here - right around 32 degrees.  And, it's Wednesday which means time for an Unraveled Wednesday post.  The first one of April 2025.  Let's link up with Kat and see what fun everyone is up to this week.

I'm happy to report that Semplice saw a bit of love this past week.  Another 12-15 rows have been added and I'm loving the way it is looking (not loving how long the rows are becoming...but that's life and that's the pattern).

You may recall that I said I would be true to Semplice and work only on that until it was finished.  Well...since I participated in the MedKNITation class last Friday I needed a mindless/easy thing to knit.  No counting involved.  I decided on a dishcloth.  It's not finished yet, but I am on the decrease rows.

A very simple pattern:  cast on 3 stitches.  Slip the first stitch (with yarn in front), knit next stitch through the front and back loops and then knit across.  Repeat till it is large enough for you (I went to 75 stitches).  The decrease rows are:  slip the first stitch (with yarn in front), knit two together and knit across.  So easy and so soothing - especially with yarn as soft as this - Dragon Tale Yarn.  It is 100% cotton, but oh so soft.  I have no idea where it came from, but the original skein was 1,600 yards and the price tag says $4.50!!  A bargain for sure.

The other thing we always talk about on Wednesdays are what we have read.  Unfortunately, I have no finished books to report on.  So, instead I will share a very easy, very quick and quite tasty cookie recipe that I tried last night.  What I like is that it is super easy and fast AND it does not make a whole bunch.  I managed to get 8 cookies from the batter (and plan to take 4 over to the kids today).  Fletch, who loves a hard, crisp cookie, was not in love with them - too moist for his taste.  I tried a piece of one and thought it was good.

Here's the recipe:

Mix together one mashed banana, 1/4 Cup peanut butter and 1 TBS maple syrup.  Then mix in 1 Cup of oatmeal.  Fold in 1/3 cup of chocolate chips and 1/3 cup of ground peanuts.  Scoop onto a prepped cookie sheet and bake at 375 for 10-12 minutes.  I'm thinking that dried fruit and other nuts would be good subs for the chocolate chips and peanuts.  I may need to experiment!

Be sure to head over to Kat's to see what everyone else is up to in the making and reading worlds.  Have a wonderful Wednesday!

End of the Week 1/24/25

 Good Friday Morning!

It's milder this morning - already up to 15!  I was thinking about C&M getting Iris out in this weather and really, they are smart.  And, Iris seems to love it.  Yesterday Colin texted Fletch a picture when they were out for a walk.  Mailing was bundled up in her puffer coat and had Iris strapped to her front - all bundled up of course.  They both had great grins on their faces.

I also remember eons ago - decades - when I was a little kid (single digits), we had a big snow and we built an igloo right outside our front door.  My parents got out sleeping bags and let us kids (my two older brothers and me) get in the igloo and be all cozy and warm.  We did not spend the entire night in the igloo, but it sure was a fun time.

Another memory is of my Mom gathering freshly fallen snow to make sugar on snow (maple syrup on snow).  Delicious!!

I did get some cookies baked in the past couple of days.  First up are oatmeal cookies with dried blueberries and pistachios in them.  Yummy!!

The next batch were chocolate chip with the addition of caramel chips.  Oh man!  I will make these again!!

Well, I can't get the picture to load, but they just look like chocolate chip cookies!  LOL. We will take some of both kinds over to Colin & Mailing tomorrow.  And, I did share some with Rob & Eva (neighbors).  I didn't see them or go in - Rob just tested positive for Covid.  He got on Paxlovid right away, so hopefully he will be feeling better soon.

My hope is to ease into the weekend nicely.  I want to get out to pick up wine to take over to C&M tomorrow, but otherwise I plan to stay in and read, knit and stitch.  Make your Friday a good one!

Weekending

 Hello All,

How are you this Monday morning before Thanksgiving?  I am just waking up and having my very first sip of coffee.  How was your weekend?  Ours was good.

Friday started the weekend with bitter weather.  We had flurries, rain and sleet ALL day long!  It was nasty and breezy.  Not a good day to be out.  I ended up baking two of the loaves of cranberry pumpkin pecan bread.  Late in the day I walked over to our neighbor's to deliver one of the loaves.  I had my winter coat on and I was freezing!!

Saturday dawned sunny and beautiful. Still a bit chilly, but gorgeous after the stormy day Friday.  Look at this little rascal:

Mabel was out on the patio and then jumped into the cast iron pot that we grow eggplants in during the summer.  Fletch had dumped out all the dirt some time ago and I guess Mabel thought it was a cozy place to curl up (I'm betting the cast iron pot absorbed some warmth from the sun).  She didn't stay there long, but it was cute to see her there.

I baked two more loaves of the cranberry pumpkin pecan bread.

Fletch took the second loaf from Friday over to a former client and I took a Saturday loaf over to C&M.  I didn't stay long enough to take my coat off as both Colin & Mailing looked awfully tired.  They had been to the farm that morning for their last CSA share for the year.

Sunday was another damp and chilly looking day.  I did not go out at all!  I did cook (breakfast and dinner) and napped.  It was a good day for knitting, reading and dozing.

Now I've got to dry my hair (my head is cold) and then grab something quick to eat.  I have an eye appointment at 9 which means leaving home by 8:30.  This is just an appointment for a field vision test (not my favorite), but at least it should be quick.

Hope your week is off to a great start.

Anyone for Dessert?

 Good Morning!

A quick Thursday morning post just to say I made a new dessert yesterday and it was good!  So I thought I would share it with you.

I found the recipe on a vegan site on IG that I sometimes look at.  I only copied out the ingredients and instructions, but no name.  I'm calling them Oatmeal-Pumpkin-Peanut Butter Bars.  Here's the deal:

Mix together:

  • 2 Cups rolled oats
  • 1/2 Cup pumpkin puree
  • 1/4 Cup milk
  • 1/4 Cup peanut or almond butter (I used peanut butter)
  • 1/4 Cup honey or maple syrup (I used maple syrup)
  • 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Mix all of the above together and press it firmly into a baking dish.  I just lined an 8x8 pan with parchment paper.  Bake at 350 for 20 minutes or until edges are golden brown.  Let it cool.

Once cool, melt 1/3 Cup of chocolate chips with 1 tsp coconut oil.  (Just melt in the microwave in 30 second intervals till melted and smooth.). Spread this over the cooled bars.  Chill in the fridge for 15-20 minutes until the chocolate sets.  Cut into bars.

Some notes:

  • I tasted more peanut butter than pumpkin - I may try increasing the pumpkin puree and decreasing the peanut butter next time.
  • I don't keep pumpkin pie spice on hand, so since the recipe already calls for cinnamon, I just sprinkled in some nutmeg and some ginger.
  • I would increase the melted chocolate.  I had a difficult time covering the entire pan with the melted chocolate.  And honestly, there is nothing wrong with more chocolate!  LOL
  • Fletch and I both thought they would be a little firmer or crunchy, but they are moist and still very tasty.

I hope you enjoy if you make them.  They were quick and easy to make, that's for sure.

Friday, At Last 11/8/24

 Good Morning All,

It's (finally) a bit chillier this morning (low 40's) which feels more appropriate.  I think it will be a sunny day, but it's a little hard to tell right now.  I've been encouraged to wake to very cloudy and overcast skies, but so far, no rain.

And my it has been a long week hasn't it?  I've just wanted to sleep a lot.  And I have napped each day which has been a wonderful escape.  Yesterday morning I decided to bake something.  Fletch had seen a recipe in a magazine for a baked apple bread so I set out to make that.  I was surprised that it called for not peeling the apples.  There are chunks throughout the bread and also slivers of apple all along the top.

Really it was just ok.  Not great.  We both found it drier than expected.  I found the flavor to be a bit bland (despite cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom).  I also think the apple slices on the top are not necessary - with plenty of apples in the batter, no need to put more on top.  Bottom line?  I will not save the recipe.  BUT, it was fun to bake and nice to have something different.  We took half of it over to C&M's last night.

C&M are doing well.  We did not see Mailing - she was at a work dinner.  Next week is her last week in the office - she will be working from home after that.  Things are coming together - they received their first order from Dyper (the diaper service they are using); the crib has been set up, the dresser/changing table is in place and all is really ready for the big arrival!!  They have a futon in the room that is the nursery and Talbot was happily sitting on top next to a giant stuffed lion:

Talbot seems to have adjusted well to life without Marcel.  I'm glad of that.

The framed piece on the wall is a cross stitched piece that was made by one of my sister-in-laws for Colin when he was born.  Fun to see it up on a wall again.

No plans (so far) for today.  I still feel pretty worn out from the week, so taking it easy will be a priority.  Wishing everyone a wonderful, easy weekend - enjoy!

Thursday Stuff

 Hello All,

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

It is so dark these mornings, but I think it is this weekend we "fall back" and turn our clocks back, so the mornings won't be quite so dark (at least for a little bit).  Afternoons, on the other hand, will be darker.

Yesterday was super warm and I think there will be more of that today.  Fletch and I sat out comfortably and then he grilled steaks for our dinner.  Yum!

Today I'll share some things with you - a miscellaneous 3 on Thursday (copying Carole) if you will.  First up, I did make both cranberry relish and cranberry chutney yesterday.

The relish (on the right is just cut up/ground up cranberries and oranges.  And a boat-load of sugar.  The chutney is a ground up orange and cranberries (not ground up) cooked on the stove with cinnamon, cloves, ginger, apple cider vinegar and sugar.  I don't process these as they keep FOREVER in the frig.  I made enough to give a jar of each to C&M and I even have an extra jar of the chutney for Fletch to take to a former client.

Because Fletch is going to visit his former client, I had to bake some cookies.  Connie and David LOVE cookies.  I made a batch of chocolate chip with the addition of some cut up uncrystallized ginger.  I think chocolate and ginger go so well together.  Fletch sampled one last night and pronounced it delicious.  I was too full from dinner to try one...but I will today!

Between the cranberry relish and chutney and the cookies, our house smelled like a combination of Thanksgiving and Christmas!

The last thing to share is wine!  You all know that at times I buy wine by the label and the other day was no exception.  I have not heard of Cult Wine from Napa previously, but I picked up a bottle of cab to try.  For some reason, my pictures are not loading...or I can load one but it won't show when I preview my post.  But here is a LINK to what the front of the bottle looks like.  The wine is just ok - not great, but it went well with our steaks.  The label though?  That just cracks me up!

I have no idea if we will get any trick or treaters this evening.  It's always a crap shoot.  Sometimes we get some and many years we have none.  I was remembering that years ago my aunt in Vermont would bake chocolate chip cookies to give out.  She used to have kids (little and big) come from miles around for her cookies.  Today, of course, no one would let their kid have home-made cookies which is kind of sad.

Hope everyone's Thursday is spooky!  Have a good one.

Weekending 10/7/24

Good Morning One and All,

How are you this fine Monday morning?  I am doing well.  A bit groggy - not yet fully awake, but doing well nonetheless.  How was your weekend?  Mine was a nice quiet one.

Starting Thursday (because I'm retired, my weekend can start any time!  hahaha).  We put the final piece in the 299 cats and a dog puzzle.

It wasn't as hard as it looks.  We took it over to Colin & Mailing's that evening and I think they will try it without the border pieces which should make it a little more difficult.

I also baked some banana bread on Thursday - knowing we were heading to C&M's that evening I wanted to take half of it to them.

This was a new-to-me recipe that called for espresso powder in the batter as well as chocolate chips and walnuts.  It was finished with a maple glaze.  C&M and F all liked it.  I did not.  I now realize that I am not a fan of chocolate chips in banana bread (I know that is a scandalous opinion, but there you go).

Fletch and I got our Covid booster shots on Friday (no reaction on my part...Fletch had a sore arm for a few days).  Next up we need to get the Tdap vaccine.  Colin has been pestering reminding us that we need to get that before the baby is born.  My last Tdap was in 2013, so I'm due and Fletch last had one in 2006, so he is way over-due.

My weekend included reading, stitching and knitting, so that made it a good one.  I received notice that both Clear and Intermezzo are waiting for me to pick them up at my library.  When it rains it pours!  Intermezzo is the next selection for the Read With Us group and we will not be discussing it until January...so not sure I want to read it now...the way my memory is (or isn't) I may not remember it!  But, I can always get it again.

Fletch did a bit of garden clean up (taking down the cucumber trellis and spreading some top soil).  The large raised bed is ready for garlic planting.  Meanwhile, tomatoes keep coming in fast and furious!

I may make sauce today since there is left over hot and sweet sausage that Fletch grilled last night.  And, I will need to get out and pick some greens for a salad tonight (steamed mussels, salad and garlic bread is tonight's menu - YUM).

Enough rambling!!  Time to pour a second cup of coffee and see if I can wake up a bit.  I hope your weekend was lovely and that your week is off to a good start - enjoy!!

Weekending 3/25/24

 Good Morning Everyone,

My gosh but we had a ton of rain on Saturday!  I woke to hear it raining during the night and it never let up until dinner time.  I'm not sure how much rain we got - we haven't yet put our rain gauge out because our temps are still dipping below freezing - but our backyard was essentially a lake!  And then the winds picked up and roared.  Sunday morning I noticed that once again my archery target and the backdrop at the edge of our yard before the woods had blown over again.  Poor Mabel did not know what to do.  She wanted to go out, but then she wouldn't.  Instead she tried to drive us crazy getting into and onto things that she should not.

Backing up a bit, Colin & Mailing came over for dinner on Friday.  We had picked up some strawberries when we were grocery shopping and I found rhubarb from the garden in the freezer, so I made a strawberry-rhubarb crostata for dessert.

Tasty, but I won't bother freezing rhubarb this coming summer.  It is much better fresh!

I did manage to do a few chores - laundry was done and I finally (finally!!) dusted and vacuumed our bedroom.  Fresh sheets and a clean room do wonders for a good night of sleep.  I also ran to the library and picked up a few books.

Sunday was for making.  I started a new cross stitch piece (more on that tomorrow), I cast on with my February yarn from the Farmer's Daughter (finally) and also pulled out a project that I had forgotten about - my Shakerag Skirt!!  That will be receiving some well earned attention.

This is a busy week - something going on each day, but all manageable.  Meanwhile, it's time to pour another cup of coffee and dry my hair.  I hope your week is off to a great start!

Weekending 9/4/23

 Happy Labor Day!

Theoretically it is still the weekend because today is a holiday!  I hope everyone is enjoying themselves.  I bet lots of you are doing cookouts today - picnics with friends and family.  We don't really have any plans.  It is supposed to be pretty warm (ok, stinking hot) here.

My weekend really started on Friday with my conference calls being cancelled.  Work was still kind of busy (there are some folks who just can't chill, you know?).  But I managed to do some baking and some cooking!  I did make a rhubarb/peach crostata in the morning.  And wow was it good!

We each had a taste mid-afternoon and Fletch has slowly been finishing it up.  There is still a lot of the fruit that I had cut up - way too much for another crostata, so I think I will make a rhubarb/peach crisp.

Then I decided to cook for lunch.  Fletch has not been interested in any tofu dish that I mention for dinner, so I decided to make some for lunch.  It was quick and easy:  Honey Sriracha Tofu:

I had it with some leftover jasmine rice and then sprinkled edamame and scallions on top.  Yum!  I had some more of it for lunch yesterday and it was even good leftover.

With the forecast to be pretty hot today, we are just planning a simple dinner tonight - a salad made out of white (Cannellini) beans cooked with a wicked amount of garlic and parsley with marinated artichoke hearts blended in.  It will cool before we eat it and we have some crusty Italian bread to have with it.  And, maybe some of the cherry tomatoes from the garden.  Easy, tasty, and not hot.

Our weather remained nice both Friday and Saturday (chilly mornings and cooler evenings).  Saturday morning Dee and I got together as usual for some quality time knitting and chatting.  After that I stopped by C&M's house to water house plants.  I also started to empty out their frig - eggs had been left (gross) as well as lots of condiments that had not been touched since last Fall.  I filled one trash bag with stuff and brought that home to go out in our trash.  I think one more bag will do it.

We decided to have our first fire of the season on Saturday night.  I queued up Kym's Summer Vibes Playlist and Fletch lit the fire.

A very relaxing and fun evening!!

The other day I did receive a voice mail that the washing machine part should be in the hands of the repair folks by this Wednesday and they will be out on Thursday to repair (hopefully really this time) my machine.  But, as we all know, when it rains, it pours.  We have decided that it is (way past) time for our upstairs bathroom to be renovated.  I decided to take a shower downstairs and discovered that I couldn't - the diverter was broken.  So, we had a plumber out for that...of course a part needs to be ordered...should be about a week.  And then yesterday Fletch discovered a very slow leak under our kitchen sink.  It's always something (or everything) OR, if it's not one thing it's another.  Oy vey!

Oh well, nothing I can do about it, so I will do my best not to fret.  Today I plan to just relax, stitch, knit and read.  No chores allowed!!  The upcoming week is going to be busy, so I'd best just chill today.

Weekending 8/7/23

Good Morning,

How are you?  I'm doing well.  It is mild this morning, but humid.  We had a bit of rain overnight and I believe more is expected today.  The garden will be happy.

Another week has started.  Mine started off annoyingly with an email at 5:30 this a.m. from one of my bosses asking me to call him as soon as I got his email.  (I have not yet called him.)  Turns out his flight this a.m. was cancelled and all flights to PHL on Delta were cancelled.  Oh well...he booked himself to fly into Baltimore instead.  Just hoping this is not a portent of how the week is going to go....

I hope your weekend was a good one.  Mine was great!  Plenty of time for knitting and stitching and reading.  Saturday morning started off with a meet up with Dee for coffee, stitching and a whole lot of chatting.  It was great.  When we split up, Dee headed off to meet up with Steve - they had plans for the afternoon.  I decided to check out the Home Goods nearby.  I love Home Goods and I had not been in one in quite some time.  This particular one was a bit too crowded for my taste, so I did not stay long, but they are ready for Fall:

Lots and lots of Halloween decor and let me tell you, folks were buying!

Because of wandering around Home Goods (also Marshalls - no luck) and then heading to a grocery store for a couple of items I got home a little later than usual.  I spent the balance of the afternoon prepping for dinner and then Fletch and I sat on the patio to watch the birds and sip our beverages.  We had a goldfinch appear!

A little blurry zooming with my phone, but do you see him on the green fence post?  Just a brilliant shade of yellow.

Sunday was filled with a lot of cooking which you all know I love!  I made biscuits and sausage gravy to go with fried eggs for breakfast.  Once that was done I started prepping some things for home made pizza.  I roasted some eggplant, a pint of cherry tomatoes and sauteed a bunch of mushrooms.  Yum!

Then I decided to make a peach crostata because our peaches were very (very!) ripe.

It certainly looks rustic, no?  I used this recipe and although tasty, the pasty was a real bee-otch to work with.  Next time I will use my own pastry recipe.  Holy moly the peaches are so good this year!

Sunday afternoon we went back to Colin & Mailing's house.  I checked the mail (mostly trash) and watered the house plants (no picture, but the yellow orchid is still in full bloom!).  Fletch did a bunch of weed wacking and trimming of plants overgrowing the sidewalk and other areas.  When we got home we indulged in a piece of the peach crostata and then sat on the patio.

Our wren family has been busy!  The parents feed the youngsters non-stop and I think they are getting ready to fledge.  If you look closely at the video, you will see a baby poking it's head out of the house...then a parent comes in, the baby opens his/her mouth wide, and the parent puts a worm or something in the open mouth.  They are noisy creatures!!

And that's it for me!  I hope your Monday is a good one filled with whatever you love to do.

Weekending 7/31/23

 Good Monday Morning!

It is a gorgeous morning here in Eastern PA.  Our heatwave has broken (currently 61 degrees at 6:48 am) and the humidity feels as though it has dropped.  I've been able to sleep with the AC off, ceiling fan on and windows open for the last two nights!  If work will not rear its ugly head, I may get out for a walk a little later.

How was your weekend?  Mine seems to have been the right combination of different things.  It started off Friday with some home made camponata for dinner.

(That's lavender from the garden behind the camponata)

We had the camponata on some crusty bread that I had brushed with EVOO and then warmed/heated/slightly toasted in the oven.  Delicious!!

And while we were having dinner, Steve the Beav came onto the patio!  I've never seen him this close to the house...first he came up to the fire pit by the picnic table and then just kept coming!  It was hysterical.

I was so surprised that I fumbled to get my phone to take a picture.  Not the greatest, but there he is right by our back sliding door to the patio!  A brazen fellow.

Saturday morning found me meeting up with Dee as usual for our check in to solve the world's problems and keep our sanity.  I had started my Allsorts Sock #1 (I was through the 15 rows of ribbing that I do), so started in on a pattern I had decided on which involved some slipped stitches.  After 6 rows I decided it was fugly and was just going to rip everything out, but (as usual) Dee saved the day and ripped it back to my ribbing and picked up my stitches.  I pretty much suck at doing that.  So thank you Dee!  And a bit of progress was made on that first sock!

No pattern, just plain vanilla.  The yarn has spoken!  This is KnitPicks Static yarn and it is striping up very evenly much to my surprise.  Caking it up, I was sure the colors would be all over the place, but I am loving how it is knitting up.

Sunday Fletch and I spent a little time pulling an invasive vine out of the bed where our lilac is.  That darned Virginia Creeper is everywhere!  And hard to pull out too.  In the afternoon we wandered over to Lansdale to Colin & Mailing's house.  I watered the house plants and Fletch repaired a latch on one of their cabinets that was not staying shut.  Next time he needs to do some trimming of plants that are trying to take over the sidewalk from the driveway to the front door.  The lawn looked good though - it is being cut every two weeks.

And today has already been a productive one!  Nuts have been roasted and a cake is out of the oven cooling...I will frost it later.  Cheers to the week ahead - let's make it a good one!

Weekending 7/24/23

 Hello and Good Morning!

How are you and how was your weekend.  Mine was excellent~~!

Saturday morning I met up with Dee of course and that was delightful.  A very pleasanat older woman (probably she was our age!) stopped to comment on our knitting and when she left said she was going to call her sister and tell her they needed to get back to knitting.  Ha!  Later that day I made a strawberry/rhubarb/blueberry crisp.  Oh my!

Fletch gave me the ultimate compliment saying it was so good that he didn't even need whipped cream!

Sunday I managed a 3+ mile walk alongside the canal.  I ventured out right after breakfast so it hadn't gotten to the stinking hot level, but I was still drenched by the time I got home.  There were a number of people out and about - some walking, some jogging, some in kayaks and some on paddleboards, some on bikes and then 2 guys who were wading in the river.  As I was on my return walk those 2 guys came up onto the trail...their jeans and sneakers were covered in mud!  There were no blue herons that I saw and not as many turtles as usual.  My pace was a little faster than usual and today I am paying the price.  I had hoped to walk this morning, but my right thigh is very tight and stiff, so I will skip an early morning walk.  I have plenty to do around here...the bathrooms need to be cleaned, the kitchen floor needs to be swept and there are 4 garden cukes on the counter - time to make some pickles!

I also received a most wonderful surprise on Friday.  Leslie, Jaimie and Emory were driving back to PA from RI and Leslie texted asking if they could stop by...that they had something of Mom's to give to me.  I've told you all many times how Leslie's Mom was my second Mom (and my Mom was Leslie's 2nd Mom).  The girls showed up just after 5 and brought me this:

This was Mom's knitting/crocheting/sewing basket!  And it is filled with so many goodies.  Here's looking in one side:

I have not gone through it all yet, but there are knitting needles, crochet hooks, seam rippers (at least 3), scissors (both pinking and regular - there are at least 8 pairs of scissors), a darning egg, some snaps, some thread, etc., etc.  Even glue sticks for a hot glue gun!  Oh, and a leather punch.  A treasure trove for sure.  My Mom taught me to knit, but Leslie's Mom taught me to crochet.  We shared a love of sewing too and this is just such a wonderful gift.  I'm thrilled to have it.

So, as I said earlier, an excellent weekend!  Let me hear how yours was.

Unraveled Wednesday 2/1/23

 Good Morning,

It's dark and early here!  And, there is snow on my car in the driveway.  Figures this is the day I need to be at the office before 8 a.m.  Oh well.  It's not a lot of snow and I will warm the car before I need to scrape it off and pull out.

My baking continues!  Yesterday I made Harvest Spice Bread.  Oh man is it good!

This bread has pumpkin puree in it as well as grated carrots, chopped apples, raisins and walnuts.  What's not to love?  Oh, and it is very, very easy to make.  Here's a Link to the recipe I used.  Fletch is planning to take a loaf of the bread, some brownies and some cookies to Connie and David today.

And, my new rice cooker arrived yesterday.

Geeze this thing is more complicated than I think is necessary, but I can now cook all different kinds of rice as well as make baby food (which will come in handy if Fletch and I somehow lose all our teeth!).  I plan to test it out tomorrow night, so will let you know how it works (and if I can figure it out).

But on to the business of the day.  It is February 1st (already) and time to link up with Kat and the band of Merry Unravelers to talk making and reading.  Naturally not all that much knitting has happened here (I've been busy baking and finishing up a sampler).  The cowl for my SIL has not seen a single stitch/row added since I posted last week, so no picture of that.  The first green sock is moving down the foot.

I really thought/planned that I would have this one finished by now, but other things occupied my time.  Anyway, no rush as these are for me.  No rush on the cowl either since it is a Christmas gift.  I also thought I would have started a hat out of the Lopi I ordered OR the Albers Shawl in the Kid Silk Haze that I won...but nope - neither of those have been started.  And that won't happen today either.  C'est la vie.

On the reading side of things, Fletch and I have just about finished this book - we only have 7 or so pages left.  It's a fun read, but some of the stories are pretty strange.  I'm reading Red Knife by William Kent Krueger.  It's the next in a series by him that I am reading, but honestly I'm kind of bored with it.  I think this series may have run its course for me.  I have some books coming in at the library, so hopefully one of those will grab my attention.

My reading of Middlemarch has also slowed - as mentioned above, I've been busy baking and doing other things.  Now I need to get busy and get ready to drive to the office.  Hoping I can catch up on blogs once the meeting starts (since I'm not participating in the meeting - just making sure breakfast and lunch are delivered and set up - lol).  I do have some work I have to do, but I don't expect that will take ALL morning.

Have a wonderful first day of February!

Tiny Needle Tuesday 1/31/23

 Good Morning Everyone!

How are you?  I am not yet fully awake, but trying to make a go of it.  Sipping my Cafe du Monde coffee and feeling the warmth slip into my bones.  It's a little wet out there - Mabel came in with some drops on her back and I can see rain against some of the windows and on the cars.  A good day to stay in.  My computer says:

I was not expecting a wintry mix.  Not sure that will really happen.  It is in the 30's out there.

Yesterday ended up being another baking day for me!  In the afternoon I made some brownies:

Back in the day (when Colin was a yongster) I was always baking brownies - at least once a week it seems.  And then I stopped.  Not sure why, but maybe I'm starting again?  This time I added an extra ingredient - Espresso Powder!  Oh yum.  Next time I will add more.  The powder is another thing I ordered from King Arthur.

After dinner I melted a stick and a half of butter and made some Toffee Pecan cookies:

These are so good (sprinkled with sea salt before going in the oven).

As I mentioned to Dee last night (we were texting back and forth while I was baking), I seem to be a baking fool these days.  Maybe it's because I didn't do any Christmas baking?  I don't know.  I was just in the mood.  And, Fletch is going to see some former clients of his this week and I always like to send some goodies with him when he visits Connie and David.  They are always so appreciative of cookies or breads or whatever, so I will package up a nice selection of cookies, brownies and maybe something else for him to share with them.

But today it's all about the Tiny Needle.  I have a finish!!  Woo-Hoo!  The "Praise Loudly - Blame Softly" sampler by Eileen Bennett is complete.  I finished it up Saturday night.

Definitely not one of my favorite samplers and I am pleased to be finished with it!  Too many Queen stitches and too much outlining for my taste.  But, I did enjoy getting back to doing "specialty" stitches - something other than just x's on the fabric.  That part was fun.  It's been put away in the "finishing drawer" where my unframed pieces reside.

Ellen Harrison is progressing a bit as well.

Another little motif and the start of the big house.  The blue roof and two chimneys are stitched.  Here's a closer shot of the roof and chimneys.

Stitching the house will be a bit like mindless knitting.  I'll have to count a bit for putting in windows, etc., but mostly it's just a lot of plain stitching back and forth.

Hard to believe it's the last day of January.  In 2 days it will be Groundhog's Day!  Time to dry my hair and get my day started.  Hope your Tuesday is a good one!

Cuban Bread

 Hello Friends!

Monday when I posted about the weekend and mentioned making Cuban Bread, Kim in Oregon said she hoped I would share the recipe.  Today seems like a good day.  Here's the picture (again) from Sunday's baking:

The bread has a very good crust and a nice, chewy interior.  It is good plain.  Good slapped with butter.  Good toasted.  Good dipped in EVOO or some kind of soup.  It's good any way you choose.  It's bread!  So yummy!!

Cuban Bread

  • 5-6 Cups of flour
  • 2 TBS sugar
  • 2 TBS yeast
  • 1 TBS salt
  • 2 C Hot Water

Put the HOT water in a large bowl.  Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for a few minutes.  Meanwhile, mix together 4 cups of flour with the salt and sugar.

Pour that flour mixture onto the yeasty water and beat for 100 strokes.  Add the remaining flour (a little at a time - I only needed one more cup) and knead for 8 minutes (adding additional flour as you knead to keep it from sticking to you or the surface on which you are kneading).  cover with a towel and let it rise for 15 minutes.

Punch it down; divide and shape into two round loaves.  Set the loaves on a greased upside down cookie sheet and cut an X on the top of each loaf.

Place in a COLD oven - do NOT preheat the oven.  Place a pan of shallow water under the rack.  Turn the oven on to 400 and bake for approximately 50 minutes.

That's it!  Easy peasy and so tasty.  We are, in fact, having it again tonight along with grilled sausage and a green bean casserole.

On another note, I can't remember if I mentioned or not, but the two lemons forming on our lemon tree fell off!  I found them both on the floor.  But, now the tree is blooming again (and is so fragrant!), so I'm hoping for at least one more lemon to form.

Time for me to get to work!  Have a wonderful Thursday.

Unraveled Wednesday 11/23/22

 Good Morning All,

Looks to be another fine day here in Eastern PA.  The temps have warmed up a bit (32 this a.m. instead of the teens) and the sun is out.  There is a fat male Cardinal sitting on a wire outside one of my office room windows.  So pretty.

Yesterday was full of food.  LOL.  Fletch and I did a quick, small ($138 later) shopping at one store.  We picked up some necessities:  cat food (Mabel consumes food like she has not had any in months!), sunflower seeds and a fresh suet cake for the birds.  No meat and no paper products or cleaning supplies which automatically jack up the bill.  My gosh a trip to the store has gotten even more expensive.  AND, we couldn't get everything there - I had to run to a different store in the afternoon for a certain kind of tea that Fletch likes as well as soda that he drinks, but also peanuts for the birds (which the first store does not sell).

The afternoon was then spent baking and cooking Fletcher's Mom's Cranberry Chutney recipe.  On the baking front I made Cranberry Pumpkin Pecan Bread.  Oh My!

This morning, Fletch will take one loaf over to a couple for whom he still works occasionally.  I think I'll send along a jar of the chutney too.

The second loaf of bread will probably be shared with Rob and Eva across the street.

Anyway, the house smelled marvelous all afternoon, but by the time I should have been cooking dinner, I didn't really feel like it.  Trader Joe's to the rescue!  When I shopped there on Monday, one of the items that I picked up that was not on my list was this:

Another shopper was scooping up bags of this into her cart.  I asked her how it was and she highly recommended it.  Well folks, if you like mushrooms, I highly recommend it too!  The truffle sauce is very rich tasting and yummy.  Best of all, it heats up from freezer to table in about 15 minutes!  The bag says it contains 3 servings, but we finished the entire bag...just the two of us.  To go along with this I threw together a salad of garden greens and garden radishes with a few sugar snap peas and a bit of cucumber.  Cleanup was a breeze too.

Let's get to the knitting, shall we?  After all, it is Unraveled Wednesday when Kat hosts the Merry Band of Makers to talk making and reading.  Dee had posted a shot of our twinie socks last Saturday.  Since then a bit more has been knit on the Turning Leaves vanilla sock.

The skein of yarn is LARGE - I will be making these socks longer than normal.  I've gotten to the point where I usually would start the heel flap, but weighing the yarn last night, I still have 92 grams!

The Christmas sock is also made from a very large skein of yarn.  I will start the heel flap on this one next.  There are 15 rows of ribbing and 85 rows of plain vanilla.

My head has calmed down a little (lol) and I'm not throwing around ideas of multiple other projects to start.  This is good - I want to concentrate on finishing these two pairs of socks and then move on to other things.  I say that today...we'll see what tomorrow brings.

The reading side of things is pretty much where it stood last week.  Fletch and I are still working our way through (listening to) Graceland, At Last by Margaret Renkl.  I'm very happy that the second half of the book is not political.  There is more about music (Renkl lives in Nashville) and other things.

I am well past the half way mark of The Marriage Portrait which is the selection of the "Read With Us" group (hosted by Kym, Carole and Bonny).  I love it!  The other day I mentioned to Kym that it is a book I don't want to put down once I start reading, but at the same time, I'm trying to drag it out to make it last!  Most likely I will need to re-read or listen to it prior to our discussion in January.  My guess is that I will finish it up in these next few days.  That's ok as I have a bunch of other library books on my nightstand (including The Colony and Booth) - such a wealth of reading material.

Today I will be mixing up dough for pie crusts - most likely I will make the pies tomorrow morning.  Wishing you all a very Happy Thanksgiving!
