Hello Out There!
Still plenty mild here...not sure when the temp will drop. Yesterday I did manage to get my laundry done (dried on the line - a great breezy and warm day for drying) and switching out tank tops and shorts for warm sweaters and turtlenecks. While doing that, I also opened a treasure trove of memories.
In my closet there was a plastic bag (the kind you get from the dry cleaner after your comforter or quilt has been cleaned) filled to the ripping (literally) point with things from 35 years ago! Things that I had saved hoping that one day Colin would have a child. Ands, that time is nearing!!
First up, a little hat that I knit for Colin when he was a wee one.
I cannot get it to rotate...sorry. This yarn is so soft.
There were also a few things I sewed for him: a pair of pants and two overalls.
And then there were two sweaters I made him when he was in day care. How he hated having these sweaters put on him! LOL
Again, I cannot get this to rotate. Blue with nibs of color and cables!! My first cables ever.
I so remember knitting these sweaters. Colin was just a toddler and I started going to a yarn shop (no longer in existence) in Chadds Ford. It's a bit of a drive (an hour each way), but I used to go one night a week to knit with the shop owner and her daughter.
Also found, but not pictured: 5 or 6 hand-knit or crocheted blankets. They have been washed and dried and folded for Colin to take back home. Colin's Cub Scout shirt, cap and scarf. Hahaha - he probably will not want those. A pewter plate with the alphabet and numbers 1-10 around the outside. Also a set of Winnie the Pooh dishes - divided plate, cup and bowl. They have been washed and I hope he wants them.
There were an equal number of things that did not far well in the closet over the decades. A hand knit outfit, another blanket, some other clothes (the Baby Gap stuff weathered extremely well!). Tucked away were some things from Fletcher's baby time! Stuff his Mom must have sent when Colin was born. Also a toothbrush with a silver handle that Fletch's uncle and aunt sent when Colin was born - we never used it!
All of this, as you can imagine, ate up a good part of the day...but it also brought back a flood of happy memories. Colin is coming over tonight for dinner and (hopefully) a fire. Fingers crossed he will take some of these things home with him.
I have a suitcase filled with dresses I made for the girls and keep thinking I should figure out what to do with them since we have grandsons 😂
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely meander down memory lane!!!!
ReplyDeleteThose baby things are adorable! I had forgotten how cute little kids are in overalls. I knit sweaters for my boys too, and I think the only pictures I have of them wearing the sweaters are from when I struggled to put them on while they were howling and trying to take them off. Surely Colin will want the silver-handled toothbrush!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your trip down memory lane Vera. I've gone down similar ones with each of our kids when their firstborn came along. I saved the outfits they came home from the hospital in, along with other things. They have all been excited to have the things and Mandy even put the same little dress on Piper when she came home. Now it's in a shadow box frame on her wall with her birth announcement and hospital bracelet. I actually saw "Baby J" running around on a facetime call with a pair of pants from Alex's babyhood. Those moments are a lot of fun.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure both Colin and Mailing will appreciate everything.
Blessings and hugs,
Betsy
Precious memories! I hope Colin took all of the items and will use and cherish them so they can create new memories.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you found those items at just the right time!
ReplyDeleteOh - that's wonderful! I love it when people hang on to stuff like that! We have a wee kilt that was Dave's when he was a toddler. It's just the cutest thing!
ReplyDeleteAwww....how sweet that you saved his wee things. I got a bin full of my kid's things too. They do bring back a flood of memories.
ReplyDeleteOh I love all this! I'm sure he will want it all!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a treasure trove that bag was! I hope he enjoys seeing all of these tiny hand-made things from his past, and I'm sure he'll want a lot (if not all) of it!
ReplyDeleteWhat a treasure trove, Vera! They are all just so adorable! I was not a knitter when my kids were that young so I am in awe of your gorgeous handknits!
ReplyDeleteoh my goodness!! this is exciting :) Loved seeing things from the past.
ReplyDeleteThose trips down Memory Lane are so much fun, aren't they? Such a treasure trove. XO
ReplyDeleteOh, that's so fun! Beautiful sweaters, Vera! I still have a small box with baby things from when my kids were little (not EVERYTHING was given to Ali). It's fun to peek inside once in a while.
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful knits you made for Colin! Sure would be special to see their baby in some of these... We have a few handknits from my husband's grandmother, and I put those on our babies for as long as they could squeeze into them!
ReplyDeleteVera, how exciting to be passing along all those things you made - this new baby is going to be wrapped in so much love!
ReplyDeleteI hope he took some things home too. It really is a rite of passage to get out the baby things and pass them onto the next generation. I did that with my kids.
