Friday Felines and Other Stuff

 Hey There!  Good Morning!

Oh it is a rainy one out there.  It started sometime overnight and I heard it raining pretty loudly at one point.  I would love to just hibernate, but the kids are off for a long weekend with friends in the Poconos (thank goodness in a cabin and not in tents!!) and someone (that would be me) needs to go over to their house early to feed the Grand Kitties.  When we are on cat duty we go over twice a day...so we (collective we) will go back tonight to feed again.  We are just feeding through Sunday morning as Colin & Mailing will be home Sunday afternoon.

Speaking of cats...look where Mabel was yesterday while I was working.

That's a nice resting place for her...the dough bowl which was Nanno's (Fletcher's Grandmother) is filled with small pincushions that are stuffed and quite squishy.  She is reaching out to the window (a rather dirty window) where there is a bird feeder.  The cardinals and finches were giving her quite a bit of entertainment yesterday.  They perch in the lilac just outside the window and then fly in to get some food.  Right now we have peanuts in the feeder, sometimes we put sunflower seeds in it.  Either way the birds are happy and Mabel is too!  I just noticed this morning she is standing on the little stool in front of the window with her front paws on the windowsill.  It is just barely getting light, but she is on alert!

Fletch was busy doing some garden clean-up yesterday and asked me if I wanted him to cut some rhubarb.  I said sure thinking there would be a few stalks.  I can't believe that he came in with so much!

I may freeze it as there is enough for two pies at least!  And I've already been requested to make an apple pie, a pumpkin pie and a pecan pie for Thanksgiving...I think that's enough and no need for a rhubarb pie.

It really was a pretty day yesterday so we decided to have a fire last night.

We stood around for a bit and then once the breeze died down it was pleasant just to sit by the fire (with the breeze we had to keep moving around to avoid the smoke!).  The wood was really smoky and then I realized that there was a lot of sap oozing out of the wood - it looked like melting marshmallows!

The wood was smoky but also very fragrant.  Of course my hair and clothes smelled like a campfire when we came back inside.  Oh well.

The only thing on my agenda today other than feeding Talbot and Marcel is a conference call at 11.  My call at 10 was cancelled (YAY!!).  Tomorrow after feeding the cats in the morning I'm heading over to Dee's - there is a craft show that we are going to visit.  Hoping to find some good stuff!

Hoping your weekend is filled with fun and good stuff!  Enjoy.

  1. It looks like Mabel has found the perfect spot for comfort and bird-watching! I can't believe you have that much rhubarb in the fall. I think our plants are really old (maybe 35+ years or more?) and I just get a few spindly stalks in the spring. Maybe it's time to replace them. Have fun with Dee and a good weekend!

  2. How nice of you to have such a comfy seat for Mabel to sit in while she watches CatTV! ;-)

I am jealous of your rhubarb crop. I keep saying I want to start growing it, but I know nothing about how to grow it and need to do more research. I've been told it does great in shady spots, which would make it perfect for our backyard. Maybe next year. In the meantime, please share photos of rhubarb pie so we can enjoy it vicariously!

    Have a great weekend!

  3. Mabel is the very best, I'm glad she is in your life!! Holly loves to look out the window upstairs to down below where there is a birdfeeder.

  4. I've been dying to make a fire too but it's always a bit too breezy here. I don't want to set the woods on fire. That would be no fun.

  5. Mabel sure fell into a perfect situation, Vera! She has staked out the "best spots" in the house for bird-watching, that's for sure! :-) I love when the logs "leak" like that in a fire. It's like watching . . . science! Have a great weekend.

  6. Mabel is so pretty. Looks like she's made herself right at home.
Burton used to wake us up for food.... now he wakes us up to have the catio opened. This morning I got up, fed him and went back to bed without unlocking the cat door. He followed me right back to bed and laid on my face until I got up and let him out, lol.

I've never seen logs do that! That's cool!

  8. Mabel has definitely found the best seat in the house for bird watching. Cat sized and comfy too!
I brought a rhubarb start with me from Spokane and planted it in July. It has some nice size stalks on it too. Maybe I should harvest them today before it freezes hard tonight. It's snowing lightly outside right now. First snow of the season. Ick! A good day to stay in with a puppy on my lap and work on Christmas cards and crochet.
Maybe we'll have a fire in our pit yet this fall. Next spring for sure. I miss our campfires.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  13. Wow - rhubarb in November. What did our great grandmothers do without freezers. I hope you and Dee had a good time.

  14. Look at all your late-harvest rhubarb! I'm amazed.

Mabel is smart and resourceful. I'm glad she found a spot for bird watching. It may keep your houseplants much safer.
