Unraveled Wednesday 1/13/21

 Good Morning!

Another crisp a.m. here in Eastern PA (my phone says 23).  But the air is clear.  Maybe today I will get a walk in?  That didn't happen yesterday as it was still a bit breezy and I had to run Fletch over to the mechanics to pick up the car he uses which had gone in for inspection.  I'm here to tell you if it's not one thing, then it's another.  $2K later we have his car back.  But, as I tell myself, paying $2K for car repairs is much, much less $$$ than a new car would be.  Still....

Meanwhile here we are mid-week and as usual, I am linking up with Kat to talk about what's on the needles and what I'm reading.  I've actually been productive!!  The first Yule Wave sock is finished:

I love the way this turned out.  Unfortunately, when I finished it last night and attempted to try it on, it would NOT go over my very high instep.  The colorwork on the leg is TIGHT.  I'm surprised because I consciously tried to keep it loose and my floats are loose.  I will try it again this a.m. and see if I was just mistaken last night.  If not, I will still make the second and they will be a nice gift for someone (who hopefully can manage to get them on!!).

Second up is the first fingerless mitt to go with the Antler hat I finished the other week.  I've just started this, but it is plain and I should be able to finish this one and cast on for the second today.

I love the two shades of blue together.  I plan to do the top of this in the darker blue.

On the reading side, thanks to Kat I am reading a very good book.  The House by the Lake is non fiction.  The subtitle is "One House, Five Families and 100 Years of German History."  It reads (to me) like a novel, but a frightening one.  And at times I've had to put it down because there are so many parallels to what is going on in our country.  If you enjoy history, you will like this book.  I've also started another mystery-type series by Linda Castillo.  These take place in Northern Ohio in the Amish community.  So far though, the first is a bit gruesome and I'm not sure I'll be able to read them.

That's it from me today.  It's Hump Day, so we are slipping into the downside of the week (for those who can't remember what day it is - that's been happening to me quite a bit recently - lol).

  1. Unexpected car repairs are never fun, and that was a doozy! Your Yule Wave sock is beautiful, and it doesn't seem quite fair that it may not fit you. At least you've got the fingerless mitts with soothing blues to console you. I've been anxiously awaiting my hold for The House on the Lake, now even more!

  2. Ugh, sorry about the sock! I always find that my colorwork is a little tighter than my single-color stockinette, so often when I have both in the same project, I use a larger needle for the colorwork portion to keep my gauge consistent. Of course, sometimes even with that the stranding keeps the fabric from being stretchy enough.

  3. What a pity about the sock. It's a triumph, so neat and pretty. But it will make a spectacular gift.

I'm always a very tight knitter, no matter what I do, and my tension gets tighter as I get near the end of a project. I've tried everything to loosen up. Maybe I should only knit when I'm drinking.

  4. Maybe the sock will loosen up once you wash it. It is very pretty.

So, what happened with the car????

  5. I'm terrified to do a fair isle sock for just that reason! It is so hard to be loose enough.
Thanks for the book recommendation. I'm going to get it on my Kindle today. That looks fantastic.

  6. We're having a "breeze" today too. 70 mph wind gusts in an RV is NOT fun. I'm still laying in bed because for some reason it feels safer here. And it's only 7:10 anyway. I got up, dressed, walked Chloe, then came back and put my nightgown back on and crawled into bed! :-)
The mitt is really nice with those colors and I'm sorry about the sock. Fingers crossed that it fit this morning. I just found a pattern for some mittens with colorwork that I would like to try. Several other things to finish first though.
Have a great day Vera. Stay safe.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  8. Linda Castillo books are good. I’ve read quite a few of the Kate Burkeholder (sp?) series. Sorry the sock is not a good fit, but it is handsome.

  9. When I was reading House by the Lake, I thought you'd like it! I can't wait to discuss it with you! :)

And that sock is just gorgeous!

  10. I did the same thing with some socks once and had to turn them into mitts which fit just fine. In fact I love them as mitts.

  11. Well darn on those socks. Hopefully you will be able to fix or gift them. Tight floats often happens to me when I do colorwork. It is just not my favorite way to knit although I love the look of it. Cars and houses - seems like it's always something.

  12. When I do colourwork on socks, I go up a needle size or two on the colourwork part, because no matter how loose I think I'm making them, it's never enough.

  13. What an amazing look for the sock--I hope it will fit after blocking!!!

  14. Dang.. sorry the sock didn't fit.. if you make a 2nd one and it fits, could you frog that first one and make it bigger to match? That German story sounds interesting. Each old house has a story to tell. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  15. Hello,
We have had a lot of unexpected things happening lately. The sock is so pretty, it is a shame it does not fit. I like the colors on the hat. The book's title sounds like a thriller-suspenseful story. Take care, have a happy day!

  16. The sock is beautiful, Vera. I'm so sorry it doesn't fit. . . It's really a challenge to manage gauge when doing color work, and I think especially so on things with smaller circumferences (like socks). Sarah makes a good suggestion about needle size. Have you blocked it yet? Sometimes color work stretches out and settles a bit after a bath. . .
