TGIF

 Good Morning!

Yes it is TGIF!!  And it's a grey, rainy one.  I woke in the night (what's new??) and heard rain around 2 a.m.  Usually I toss and turn, but last night I turned on my Kindle and read for about an hour.  My hope was it would make me tired enough to fall asleep quickly but that didn't happen - it was after 4 before I got back to sleep.  Oh well...

Meanwhile, I was supposed to take Tyg to the vet late morning yesterday for his annual well check (cracks me up that the vet calls it that - just like a baby) and annual shots.  But...he went out after having breakfast and was no where to be found.  The new appointment is next Tuesday at 4 p.m.  Hopefully he will be somewhere I can find him!  I think he was feeling smart about avoiding the vet for a bit!

Last night I made a batch of toffee pecan cookies...except that there are no pecans in them.

I'm not sure how long the pecans had been in the kitchen drawer (in a zip lock bag) - probably a couple of months.  While breaking some up in my hands, I (thank God) noticed a flying insect in the bag...and worse than that, I then saw a worm crawling in the bag.  It was enough to almost do me in.  But, I found a bag of walnuts (with no creatures) and used them instead.  Hopefully they are good - I haven't tried them yet.  I'm fixing dinner tonight for neighbors, so we will find out then.

Yesterday afternoon Fletch and I went to Otts - a fabulous greenhouse/nursery nearby and got some mums and asters to put around.  (the link will take you to a slide show of pictures at Otts - worth looking at, and Dee, if you have not been there, we should go some Saturday)  They had some giant pumpkins, but we'll look at the grocery store where they are a lot cheaper.  I did, however, buy myself a beautiful African Violet.

Love the shade of blue in this.  I used to have several African Violets, but I have not had any for years.  Hopefully this one will do well.

And that's a wrap for me.  Hope you all have a fabulous weekend!

  1. I keep all nuts in the freezer. Good luck catching an elusive cat, sounds like he is smart :)

  2. I haven't baked cookies in ages. I don't even do Christmas cookies anymore.

Nuts in the freezer eliminates all the stress of having to use them up to prevent them spoiling. Pecans, especially, are so expensive that I'd hate to have them go to waste.

  3. Clever Tyg and I bet those cookies are much better with walnuts than insects! I hope your lovely African violet grows and thrives and you enjoy a wonderful weekend!

  6. TYG is a smart kitty, his timing to disappear was perfect.

  7. That is my fear with my outdoor kitties-that they won't be found. One of them has an appointment in a couple of weeks and I am going to have to corral him in the house to make sure I can find him.
I love African Violets. I used to have a window full of them in my old house. The grocery store sold them and I brought them home all the time. I couldn't keep them going for long but I enjoyed them while they lasted.

  9. I have only had one African violet that did well. I kept it at my office in a north facing window. When I left the office, I brought it home and it died. All my windows here are south facing

  10. Well, Tyg had you fooled!

I planted one aster plant in our planter two years ago. Now I have asters like crazy! They are so pretty, one of my faves.

  11. I gave my Mom an African violet for Mother's Day 2 years before she died. My Dad gave it to me right afterwards because he knew it would never last. I kept that violet alive for 27 more years! Then, almost overnight it literally turned to mush and died. Since then I have bought several and been given a couple but I can't keep them alive for some reason.
Tyg is one smart cookie. I hope he's "findable" next week. :-)
Sorry about the nuts. Like a lot of others here, I keep them in the freezer because I don't use them up quick enough to keep them from going bad.
I baked a coffee cake this morning that will be our breakfast tomorrow. I've been craving one and now the trailer smells lovely.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  13. Naughty Tyg played hooky. I hope you catch him for the rescheduled appt. I love the violet you got, I've never seen one like that. I have one that is doing well and it's fun to see them bloom. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  14. You have one smart kitty! I am not mentioning his escapades to my daughter, because I fear she'd do the same thing next week when it's time for her flu shot!

I am thankful you caught the problem nuts before putting them in the cookies. I love walnuts, so if the cookies aren't to your taste, you can always send them to me!

  15. My mom had a veriety of A violets and loved them. Me? A true killer. We found some giant mums for a good price so I got them.

My pecans always taste a little rancid to me after a few weeks so I stick with walnuts and think they are better in recipes. Hope that little flying thing wasn't a meal moth!! We had them from a cat food bag and they get into everything.

A visit to the nursery sounds wonderful-the African violet is beautiful!

  17. Holly is such a "don't get too far away" soul, it's hard to imagine a cat. I sure hope he's come home safe and sound. and I sure wish I had a plate of those cookies on my counter right now! Happy Weekend!

  18. Whoops, the critters in the bag would have done me in also. I bet the cookies were delicious. The violet is so pretty. My Gram had a window full of them. She was very particular about how she fed and watered them.
