Work Update

Hi All,

Just wanted to give a quick update.  My office is essentially closing for an indefinite period of time.  The plan/hope is that my desktop computer will be packed up and shipped to Charlotte (home office of parent company) today, everything on it transferred to a new laptop and then that shipped to my home.  Whew!

The office will not be closed/non-accessible.  Our office manager will be in a couple of days per week to deal with mail, etc.  Financial folks will be in and out to deal with receiving money, sending out checks, paying bills, etc.  And, as Bobby (our CEO) said, some people may just want to come in for a day to remain sane (i.e., get away from the kids/spouse/partner/etc.).  So true.

My business is in the healthcare field and we are definitely feeling the effect of this pandemic. We provide support services (Environmental services - cleaning, patient transportation, laundry, plant operations, sterile processing, food services, etc.).  Some of our facilities are experiencing labor shortages, some are experiencing being unable to get needed products (soap, hand sanitizer, etc.).  Additionally, we are set to open/start approximately 400+ pieces of new business in the next couple of months.  It is going to be difficult at best to fully staff the new business.

A number of our employees are in the low income bracket and having children at home is preventing them from coming to work, so we are looking into setting up some temporary (long-term?) day care centers.  Also looking at getting meals/food delivered especially to those families whose kids rely on the free breakfasts and lunches they were receiving at schools that are now closed.

Anyway, I am still computer-less at home (my laptop finally bit the dust for good and I haven't replaced it...but I've enjoyed not having one quite a bit knowing I could get on line at work).  So, once my computer is shipped out to have everything on my hard drive transferred to a laptop, I will be without a computer totally for probably 36-48 hours.  I'll be able to read your blogs on my phone and that will be a comfort.

Everyone stay safe and sane!!

  1. It's nice to hear that your company is thinking about the employees who this is going to hit the hardest. I hope most companies do the same.

  2. I agree with Val - I’m happy that you work for such a compassionate company, and you can tell your boss. Be safe and virus-free

  3. So many big changes! All restaurants and bars are closed in Ohio, schools will likely not reopen until next fall, and day cares have been notified that they are likely to close, too.

You work for such a thoughtful company. They really think about their employees and those they serve.

  4. Your company sounds like it's thinking of the employees and that is a breath of fresh air. So many are not.
I'm shocked at how many people are angry about closures of schools, restaurants, etc. We HAVE to do everything we can to stop this virus. I'm SO glad you'll be able to work from home.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  6. That's wonderful for you. Daughter, the ice skating coach just got notified that a family she works with were all positive. The father is a doctor. Daughter is now also sick and no one seems to have any tests here in MD. What a nightmare.

  7. I've always said that you work for the best employer and they are certainly showing that now — from getting you set up to work from home with a laptop to looking into daycare and meals. Bravo!

  11. I'm so glad your company is making good decisions ... and I must say, being without a computer for a day or two would not be a bad thing right now. Stay home and stay well, my friend! (p.s., I LOVED the bouquet of daffodils you picked from your side yard over the weekend. what a bright spot those flowers must be!)

  13. These are very strange times. I hope you get a computer soon although I can see advantages of not having one at times. Since Friday, I have taken some breaks from social media - walking without a phone, and just turning my phone on silent for a short while. Glad to hear you are safe with a well stocked pantry. Our stores were busy last Wednesday and Thursday but mostly I could get everything I wanted. We are fortunate to have our knitting. And you have a wedding to look forward to - How wonderful. Take care.
