Good Morning Everyone,
Happy Unraveled Wednesday! The sun is up (has been up and the birds are loud!) and I can see blue sky. Poor little Iris was still not feeling all that great yesterday. Hopefully today will find her in a better mood and feeling better.
Time to link up with Kat and her Merry Band of Unravelers to talk all about making and reading. Two of my favorite subjects.
Only a little knitting was done last week. Semplice finally saw a little love. A new section was started and about 8 rows knit. Honestly it doesn't look much different, so I did not bother spreading it out.
And I am now on the decrease side of the dishcloth. Just barely!
In other yarny news, my aunt sent me a box of yarn! She lives in Maryland and a yarn shop in Baltimore (I don't know which one) sent her the yarn. Rose is involved with a needlework group at her church and I imagine that is how she came upon the gift of yarn. Anyway, she sent some to me. First up, we have four skeins of Red Heart Plush (80/20 acrylic/nylon). Not sure if I will use this or just donate it. I like the color (sage), but knitting with size 8 needles is not a strong suit for me. Maybe a nice blanket for Iris?
Next up we have 14 (!) skeins of Kid-n-Ewe from Bryspun in Eugene, Oregon. 50/50 Mohair and Wool. Each skein is 50 grams; approximately 120 yards. So there is a lot of it! I love the raspberry color and need to figure out what to make with it. Any suggestions? I'm not familiar with this yarn. It feels thin to me, but the recommended needle size is #7.
It was a good week for reading! Fletch and I finished our after dinner reading of Six Walks by Ben Shattuck. We both enjoyed the book - Shattuck's writing is just a pleasure to read and his sketches added to this memoir.
I also read Wintering by Peter Geye (a new to me author). I found Geye's writing to be beautiful. Amazon tells me that this is Book 2 of 3 in a series and I will definitely be looking for the other 2 books. I found the story compelling and moving.
Last up, I read So Far So Good Final Poems 2014 - 2018 by Ursula LeGuin. Even though the poems deal mainly with aging and dying (LeGuin passed away ini 2018), I found this volume of poems to be very good.
Thanks, as always, for stopping by and reading my post. Be sure to check out the other Unravelers to see what they are up to both in making and reading. Links can be found on Kat's blog.
What a gift!! Those skeins are just lovely! That raspberry yarn especially! Great reading as well this week! I am off to find this book by Ben Shattuck!
ReplyDeleteI hope Iris is feeling better today! That box of yarn is an exciting gift. Personally I'd be destashing the Red Heart; I can't imagine it's all that pleasant to knit with. But the mohair/wool should be very nice! I expect a larger needle is recommended because there's likely a halo from the mohair. I'd definitely swatch with several needle sizes and see what fabric you like, then search for an appropriate pattern.
ReplyDeleteI bet the Kid n Ewe is recommending a bigger needle for lacework - or like Sarah said - the mohair halo. I can't wear mohair next to my skin, so I wouldn't recommend a sweater unless you can handle itch - but it might make a nice big shawl
ReplyDeleteA little progress on Semplice is still progress!
ReplyDeletehow nice to get some yarn in the mail, it's the best mail ever. Sounds like you are making steady progress on your knitting project, I love the color.
ReplyDeleteI love the color of the Bryspun yarn!
ReplyDeleteFun yarn! Both colors are really pretty. I use a lot of acrylic when I knit for the grands and that does look like it would make a nice cozy blankie. Those 14 skeins of Bryson must be quite a sight. I don't think I've ever seen 14 skeins of anything all in one place.
ReplyDeleteIt's always fun to receive a gift of yarn! Lovely colors, Vera. I'm knitting a shawl right now, and getting near the end . . . where each row is a mile long (and longer with each row). I think of you and your Semplice every time I pick it up . . . XO
ReplyDeleteI bet Iris would love a blanket! I will need to look for that LeGuin book of poetry. I love her essays and I bet the poetry was interesting, too.
ReplyDeleteYarn mail makes for a good day. The raspberry is a very pretty color. I think Geye's books sound good reading. I may have read one quite awhile ago but maybe I just looked at them. I'm getting old. I did love that last volume by LeGuin. I also like her nonfiction books about writing. She was an interesting woman.
ReplyDeleteFree yarn is always fun to get, whether you choose to keep it or donate it to someone else who can use it!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you can find a good home for the Red Heart and as others have suggested, the raspberry mohair blend would be lovely to knit (and wear)! Hope Iris is feeling better - those jabs are no fun.
