Unraveled Wednesday 8/12/26

 Hello My Friends,

The weeks keep zipping by, don't they?  It's hard to believe that soon the school busses (or, as my brother calls them, the little yellow prison wagons) will be on the road again.  And, the bottom of my street (which is a narrow road) will be clogged with cars waiting for the school bus (apparently the kids can't walk down to the end of the street and wait...they must be driven).

The doctor's office was successfully found yesterday and I had a great visit with my primary care physician.  All of my "numbers" have improved which is great news.  I am going tomorrow for an X-ray of my knee.  My doctor is sure it is simply arthritis (which is more than enough) and not some other issue with the knee...but an X-ray will be done for confirmation purposes.  Meanwhile, I've started doing some exercises specifically for arthritic knees and this morning things already feel better!

I'm continuing with my arm exercises with baby weights (3 lbs) and doing that has completely eliminated the shoulder pain I was having (again arthritis).  And I've started incorporating some other movements that I used to do on a regular basis.  I believe that movement is key.

Meanwhile, enough of the aches and pains of aging.  It's Wednesday and time for linking up with Kat and her Merry Band of Unravelers to talk about making and reading.  I don't have a whole lot to talk about, but let's jump right in!

First up is the almost finished first Honky Tonk shorty sock.

I was positive this would have been finished by today, but life got in the way.  I've about 10 rows left on the foot until the toe decrease.  With any luck, I will finish this today whilst Iris naps.  Then it will be time to start (and finish quickly) shortie #2.  My August yarn from the Farmer's Daughter arrived and Fletch really likes it, so I will be making a pair of socks for him.  And, of course, there are still many more skeins waiting to be knit up for various people.  Iris has said she would like another pair of socks (I'm sure the ones I last made for her no longer fit...she is growing so much!).

The Farmer's Daughter's August yarn:  "Harvest Lantern" - the little mini skein has a bit of loden green in it and the two skeins together are so pretty.

On the reading side of things, I'm still reading The Calamity Club by Kathryn Stockett.  I'm past the halfway mark, but my reading has slowed.  I'm actually getting a little tired or bored with this.  The book seems way longer than necessary...but that's just my opinion and I may have a change of heart once I finish it.  There are so many different stories going on and of course various bits of ugliness (1933 Oxford, MS).

Fletch and I are continuing to really enjoy Robert Mcfarlane's The Wild Places.  We have enjoyed all of the McFarlane books we have listened to, but perhaps this one may be the best so far!

Not started yet, but I decided to go ahead and download from Audible John of John by Douglas Stuart.  The queue at my library for the book is still pretty long and I'd like to have read it before our RWU book club meeting in September.

And that's a wrap for one.  I'll be with Iris again today and am looking forward to that time.  I hope your Wednesday brings you something delightful to enjoy!

  1. I'm sure that shortie sock will be finished in no time! And the new yarn should make some very handsome socks for Fletch. Glad to hear all was good at your doctor's appointment. I was surprised this morning that my mammogram results were in (they told me it could take up to 10 business days) and pleased that all was normal.

I agree that The Calamity Club is much longer than it needs to be, but stick with it! The payoff at the end is worth it.

  2. I really like the August yarn as well... I have really liked how varied the colors have been! I am adding The Wild Places to my list, Vera. I really like Mcfarlane's writing so much! He would be a good distraction right now! Have a good day with Iris!

  3. I love the yarn you're currently knitting with, and feel the same about the August yarn. That will be a special pair of socks for Fletch! It's good that it's "just arthritis" but movement brings improvement. I didn't know how long The Calamity Club was when I started it, and thought it could have been edited and shortened. Happy Wednesday with Iris!

  4. I'll bet you're finished with those shorty-socks in no time, Vera! Especially with that lovely new yarn waiting in the wings for you . . . That should make a really handsome pair of socks for (lucky) Fletch. I'm so glad to hear your doctor appointment went well! And you're so right . . . MOVEMENT IS KEY! XO

  5. I like that new yarn and it will make a great pair of socks for Fletch. I laughed when I read that Iris has asked for another pair of socks. My grands do that too. I'm so glad that your numbers have improved and that your knee feels better already. It's amazing what movement will do.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  6. I hope you get some relief for that knee. I have too many friends with bad knees these days- ugh, aging. I love John of John and those Robert McFarlane books are so good.

  7. Isn't it amazing that the older we get the more we exercise and take care of ourselves. My husband's knee has arthritis and a torn meniscus but really it's just conservative treatment until a replacement down the road. He's going to do the exercises as well.

  8. I have finished reading John of John but remember how much I enjoy listening to Scots, so I'm going to have a listen before September!

My body's been out of whack & compensating for the bad hip for so long that other parts (knees, back) are going through an adjustment phase! The new hip feels fantastic, though.

  9. Three pounds is not a baby weight! Good for you for sticking with it--nothing is more important than consistency.

  10. That yarn is really pretty. I do think the momentum in Calamity Club slows a bit at the mid point but I also think it's worth sticking it out. I'm glad the weights are helping with your shoulder pain and I hope your knee isn't anything more serious than arthritis.

  11. If I don't do my exercise ball workout every day for my back I pay for it. I'm starting to think that this will be my life from here on out. My old body can't seem to handle being left to its own devices anymore. It's got to keep moving.
I just finished two pairs of socks for the Big Grand and tried them on today and he barely fit in them. He's grown so much since I measured that foot. His little brother will inherit those and I'll have to start over for him....sigh.

  13. I'm sure you enjoyed your time with Iris. The new sock yarn is very pretty. It's fun that Iris has requested another pair of socks. Maybe you can knit two socks down to the toe decrease and then try them on to see if she has grown since you started. Kids grow so fast. Or tube socks? Stay with any exercises and those baby weights. I think they make a difference. I have a stretching/strengthening routine that really helps me. I use three pound and five pound weights and have no plans to increase the weight but maintain what is working.

  14. Dealing with the body parts is so not fun. And what other options do we have??!! I like your new yarn--I am going to be at that shop in a couple of weeks (for work) and looking forward to it!

  15. Yes! Summer is coming to an all too soon end. Good for you being proactive with those joints. I am a slug and need to get moving. Not sure if my knee will oblige.
