Unraveled Wednesday 01/29/20

Good Morning!

How did it get to be the last Wednesday in January already?  It seems unbelievable that Saturday will be February 1st.

As usual, I'm linking up with Kat this Wednesday to see what everyone is knitting and reading.  Yesterday I did manage to cast on at lunch time for Mailing's Ear/Headband.  Between mid-day yesterday and a little bit last night, I have knit just over 30 rows.  Still a ways to go, but with only 26 stitches per row, it should not take long.

There was enough of the beautiful purple alpaca yarn left that I can use that and I'm knitting the pattern I made up for my own ear band.  Mailing tried it on last week and it fits her, so I just have to copy what I did for myself.

On the reading front, I am getting into Disappearing Earth slowly.  I've read about 2 chapters so far.  I have found that reading either poetry or non-fiction/nature-type books before going to sleep helps me sleep better.  I finished two books of poetry this week (one mentioned in yesterday's post and the other was "A Timbered Choir" by Wendell Berry.  Last night I managed to read the first chapter in The Trees in My Forest by Bernd Heinrich.  He is by far one of my most favorite nature writers.  if you have not read anything by him, I highly recommend "A Year in the Maine Woods" or "The Snoring Bird" or any of his books, really!

Both the knitting and my Kindle (for Disappearing Earth) have come to work with me today, but I'm not sure I will actually be taking/getting a lunch time today.  My guess is that today might end up being pretty busy.  But...better prepared than not.

Happy Hump Day!  Working towards the downside of the work week and looking forward to the weekend.  Hope your week is going well.

  1. I think that color is so pretty, and for a headband it should be striking! I hope you remember everything you did for your version. I have a tendency to think I'll remember, and then I start another of the same thing, and ... well, sometimes it doesn't end well. :-)

  3. Another person agreeing with the lovely color of that yarn, and the fact that it's alpaca makes it even better! Bernd Heinrich sounds like an author I'd like to read, so I'm off to check out his books. Thanks for the recommendation!

  4. It seems like this last Wednesday in January . . . has taken several months to get here! January is always such a slog . . . Mailing's headband is going to be so lovely! I hope you get a chance for a nice break today. XO (And I think poetry is always a good way to go.)

  5. This year is already flying by. I really miss my monthly stitching samplers when the calendar changes. I'd love to find another to work on but all my WIPs are shaming me.

  6. Having enough yarn for Mailing's earwarmer is wonderful. I need to find a small project to activate my knitting mojo.

  8. Purple is my favorite color and Alpaca makes it even better. My birthday is February 1 and I can't believe it is almost here already. And it's a big one. 60! Oh my! How on earth did I get to be 60?
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  10. I bet Mailing will love her gift.. I hope you share a photo of her modeling it! I'm in a reading slump.. the book I got bored me to tears and it was negative. It's called "The Trouble With Goats and Sheep" by Joanna Cannon. I wish I knew if it was going to get better.. meantime I can't force myself to try again. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  11. I am with you - I need something soothing to read late in the evening. I have read a few books by Heinrich and enjoyed them. It's been awhile since I read Wendall Berry but I should get back to him. His poetry is beautiful. I'm reading The Immortalists and can't decide whether I like it or not. It's a book group selection and it came in early on Overdrive - always a bonus.

  12. all the purple hearts for Mailing's headband (and love you'll get one too). and on the poetry front, I highly recommend the newest podcast from On Being. It's called Poetry Unbound and hosted by Padraig O Tuama (he's Irish and has the loveliest voice). The first episode dropped Monday and I've listened to it twice already. He reads the poem, offers some thoughts about it, reads the poem again and then closes. I think it would make lovely just before bed listening. (well, at least this episode ... not at all sure what he has planned for future episodes!)

  13. The yarn looks so soft and inviting-nice gift!
I find that having the knitting project with me is comforting even if I don't get to knit! lol
