Tuesday That Feels Like Monday

Hello!

Ah the traffic this morning - a ten fold increase (at least) and school buses on the road.  And early morning darkness!  Geeze, I could have crawled right back into bed so easily.

But, what  a nice weekend we had.  It started early Friday with a Noon departure from work (I will miss those summer Fridays for sure).  I did manage to get a few chores out of the way before relaxing on the patio with Fletch and a beverage.  Dinner was simple - we ordered out steak sandwiches from the place down the road.  Easy Peasy and delicious.

Saturday I went out first thing and bought my kitchen curtains!!  Woo-Hoo!  Thanks to Dee and her suggestion to check Bed, Bath & Beyond.  All I wanted were simple white cafe curtains.  Bingo!  BBB carried them in the store.  Plus I had so many coupons for BBB I got them at a steal.

Saturday afternoon Fletch and I went over to Colin's (Mailing was away for the weekend).  We took our archery stuff - target, bows, arrows.  Fletch shot first and almost got a bulls eye with his first arrow.  After that it went downhill, or rather into the woods.  Half of our arrows went over the target and into the woods and have not been found.  Needless to say, we did not continue playing.  But, we did have a great dinner of marinated skirt steak which Colin grilled along with steamed garden potatoes, cucumber salad and marinated daikon radishes.  Yum.

Colin had picked up their CSA share on Friday and gave us a few quarts of green beans, two butternut squash and some ground cherries which I had never had:

They are really tasty!  They are not sold in the stores around here.  Have any of you had them?  They have an outer husk similar to a tomatillo, but are much smaller - about the size of a nice blueberry.

Sunday I caught Steve munching on fallen apples:

Our resident groundhog.  We have called him (and all descendants) Steve the Beav ever since Colin was a toddler and thought that Steve was a beaver - lol.

The weather all weekend...up to this point...was gorgeous.  Monday dawned grey.  And then it got darker.  Honestly, at 9:30 it looked like night-time.  We had some heavy rain and a bit of thunder, but it didn't last as long as I thought it might.  We ended up having a Southern inspired meal for dinner:  a ham steak fried up, kale cooked with bacon and corn muffins with left over corn and peppers from the garden in them.

So good!

The 2nd Watermelon Sock was not finished as I had hoped, but the heel has been turned and I am on the foot.  It won't be long now.

All in all, it was just a wonderful, relaxing weekend filled with good food, family, relaxing, etc.  Hoping you all had a wonderful long weekend was well.

  1. What a great summer weekend! Your meals all sound delicious and those ground cherries are intriguing. I've never had them, but I hope you'll let us know what you end doing with them. Sorry about the lost arrows; John and I often joke that we need to stop shooting if our first arrows are good ones!

  2. My mother loved ground cherries and introduced them to me long ago. Maybe her dad grew them? I see them at the farmers market once in a while, and get them in my CSA share. What a great weekend you had! We had rain move in overnight and it's so gray and dark and darkdarkdark... ugh. My drive to work wasn't as bad as I'd feared, but I'm just a LITTLE earlier than most (thankfully!). Looking forward to some sunshine tomorrow!

  3. I have never heard of ground cherries -- but now I'm so intrigued!!! :-) We're still up north, so missing (notmissing) the back-to-school traffic today. I am still chuckling about Steve the Beav! What a great family story/tradition! Happy September, Vera. XO

  6. We've got one of those things living under our shed. I swear, between the raccoon, the three fox cubs and that thing my yard is becoming a zoo. Araignee

  9. I haven't had corn muffins in so long. My mom used to make them for me when I was a kid. They were my favourite. I'd heat them up in the microwave and slather butter on them.

When I saw the ground cherries, my first thought was - they look like Chinese Lanterns... turns out they are the same thing! I never knew they were edible!

Steve is very handsome. I haven't seen a groundhog in a long time too. We used to see them all the time when we were kids (Dad hated them because they'd dig up the lawn)

I hope your Tuesday is going well.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

We had a nice one, too.. we had a ravioli lasagna from Costco for dinner on one night and a chicken alfredo pasta the other one and out to dinner at our kid's house for clam chowder in a bread bowl. Some crocheting on my shell blanket was accomplished at their housde. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  14. I have heard of ground cherries but haven't tasted them. We picked up the six ears of sweet corn and a watermelon from our favorite produce stand on Labor Day - the last of their season. We had a quiet relaxing weekend - our son was here visiting friends so he was in and out. I cast on two new projects because why not?

  15. My mother makes ground cherry pie. Personally, I'm not a fan, but I am in the minority in her extended family.

Sounds like you had a great weekend. Ours was unusually quiet; the boys each had other things happening, so we were alone at the lake, enjoying a very relaxing weekend.
