A BIG Tree! 11/1/24

 Good Morning!

And Happy November!  There is a rosy tint to the sky this morning and...drumroll...our cars are wet and there is rain on our windows!!  Woo-Hoo!  No measurable amount, and nothing falling right now, but it was wonderful to see.

Can anyone guess how many trick or treaters we had?  Exactly None!  Happy I didn't go overboard on buying candy.

Yesterday was an absolutely gorgeous day.  I set out a little before 10 a.m. and went to a section of the Perkiomen Trail that I had not walked previously.  I parked off Route 113 and then walked toward Schwenksville.  Very soon I came upon a magnificent tree:

A swamp White Oak which I have never heard of.  The tree's diameter was measured at just over 5.5' in 2021!

The trail itself was rather nice, though it veered away from the water and closer to the road than I like.  There were a lot of folks out walking and biking, but it did not feel crowded.  A little bit after the tree I came upon some small railroad tracks:

Turns out it is the track of a "live steam" rail.  Their "run days" are only the 4th Sunday of June, July and August from 10-3.  Might be fun to check it out next summer.

This was the first time I had managed to get out to walk in quite a long time.  I managed to go a little over a mile and by the time I got back to my car my back was screaming...I need to build my strength back up.

Today I need to tackle laundry, the kitchen floor and the bathrooms.  Not as pleasant a day as yesterday for sure, but needed.  Here's hoping that your Friday...and your weekend...are filled with good things.  Enjoy!

  1. That looks like a lovely trail. I love it when there are information sign on a trail. Happy Friday

  2. I rejoiced in seeing the wet pavement and maybe a chance for more rain next week. That tree really is something. I'm sorry about those somewhat odious tasks you have for today but if you get them done, the weekend might be more enjoyable. I'm going to bake a cake and ignore my kitchen floor!

  3. We had steady rain on the 30th. All night and all day. It was SO welcome. Your walk sounds very interesting. I also will need to build my strength back up if they ever fix my back.
    Blessings and hugs,
    Betsy

  5. Looks like it was a beautiful day to be outside! We got more trick-or-treaters than normal but still not many overall. We heard our neighbor yelling at a little after 10 -- apparently some teenagers were still out and woke him up (our city's trick-or-treat times were 5:30-7:30)!

  6. Beautiful tree!

We had about 100 trick or treaters, which is our best year yet. It was very mild here. I was out in a black sundress and bare feet handing out candy - I guess I was a summer witch!
The tide has turn though, and today is downright chilly!

  7. A gorgeous place to walk or wander! Your tree made me smile…I just planted two annals in my reforesting plot! They rate high for carbon sequestration… a tree with many “pros”.
    Enjoy your weekend, Vera!

  8. That darn rain we were waiting for went right past us. It's so hot and dry here that I am watering daily.

  9. What a beautiful place to walk. We had four trick or treaters and two bags of candy. One bag is plain Hershey bars which I bought on purpose. I put them in the freezer and will chop them up for cookies.

  10. The trail looks really interesting ... I'm excited to have a bit of our morning walks in daylight again beginning tomorrow and lasting a few weeks. Your cranberry relish and chutney sound delicious - I just read about Bonny's green tomato relish with fresh ginger which also sounds yummy. Fresh ginger is so versatile. Wishing you a great weekend!

  13. gorgeous tree! We have oaks in the back and I love them and this year they have been so showy offy. If that makes sense. Or maybe I am more in tune with their beauty.
