Gardening as Therapy

 Hello and Good Morning,

After so many wonderful nights of excellent sleep...last night was a bust.  And then, when I did fall back asleep I woke up later than usual and had to scurry around.  But, my Thursday reports are finished and have been emailed out and now (for a bit) my email is quiet.

This will be a quick post as I hope to work some on Hawk Sock #2 and the Sampler.  Also walk.  It's a beautiful morning (and it was 57 when I got up at 6:30!).

Many of you who read this blog are gardeners, and even if you are not, I think you'll enjoy this article from "The New Yorker" magazine.  The link is compliments of Colin.

Happy reading.  Hope you all enjoy the day!

  1. I miss having a garden. My house had a large area in back where I grew veggies and flowers for many years. The apartment has a small patch by the front door where I grow flowers - no exactly a garden, but the next best thing.

  2. I wonder if you've tried melatonin? My sleep has been all over the place, and I've been taking 5-10 mg about 45 min before I go to bed. It's not a cure-all, but it has helped. Thanks for the great gardening link!

  3. I'm with you on the sleep issues. Met with two doctors today. One told me I need to retire. (But I can't afford to.) The other upped my sleeping meds. That helped some last week.

  4. Seems like a lot of us are having troubles in the sleeping department.

  5. Hello,
It is a nice morning for a walk, a little cooler here. My hubby is the gardener, he is the one with a green thumb in the family.
I have sleeping problems too, it is awful. Take care, enjoy your day!

  6. Sorry to hear you had sleep loss.. I'm suffering from a similar malaise. I keep worrying about our country, the illness, the post officer, etc. etc. etc. Your weekend is coming! I hope you have good plans. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  7. Fun article--I come from a long line of gardeners! Hope you got through your day okay--it's hard when the night is less than reasonable!

  9. I haven't been sleeping well for several months either. My sister suggested melatonin gummies and they work great. They don't make me drowsy but I fall asleep easily most night and there is no drugged feeling in the morning. I hope you got some knitting time and also your walk in today.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  10. I do value all the nights that I do sleep! My husband has kept a little garden this year and it's been very therapeutic for him and I get to eat the rewards.

  11. Ah, sleep issues. I know them all too well. You have my deepest sympathies. I'm sure you've tried everything--as I have--so I won't go there. I'll just hope they go away soon.

My whole teensy back yard is a landscape garden. We keep redoing parts of it because things die or get affected by Satanic Chipmunks or whatever. The latest casualties are clumps of liriope that have been invaded by some weed grasses. I'm digging them out and putting in Shasta daisies, I think. Gardens are full of change, especially in this era of climate upheaval.

  13. I've just had two decent nights in a row. I went to bed early and had very vivid weird dreams but at least I stayed asleep. I've been knitting to old radio shows in bed to make myself sleepy. I wonder how long this good stretch will last.

  14. So gardening:
I can't read the article as I don't get the NewYorker and they have caught me trying too many times
But, when i garden I envision the literal fruits of my labor.
aaaah will have acorn squash to donate soon!

  15. I hope you've had a good night's rest ... and I will say, gardenING is not at all fun for me, but I LOVE walking through someone else's garden. Thank goodness Marc is enjoying all the time outside this summer!

  16. Every now and then I have a night where I don't sleep well. I swear that it often happens during a full moon. Maybe the extra light? I just read that article on gardening. The book sounds interesting.
