One Little Word

Good Morning!


Hard to believe that it is the last Tuesday in February.  And Happy Mardi Gras by the way.  I forgot to wear beads today.


I missed posting about my One Little Word at the end of January, but this time I remembered.  My OLW for 2020 is:





Naturally, I think of it in terms of food (because, well, I love food - love to eat, love to cook), but there are so many other ways to  nourish ourselves whether it be through education, physical activity, relationships, self care, etc.


All my life I have been an avid reader.  As a child one of my favorite places to go was the library.  My best friend, Leslie, and I would spend hours together reading.  (We used to set up lots of snacks and beverages.)  But late last year I went into a reading slump and couldn't find anything that really appealed to me.  So many books just seemed "meh" to me.  Fortunately I believe that spell has ended.  I think my reading tastes have somewhat altered as well.  I've been reading more poetry and essays this year and find that they are what I crave.  I'm happy that books are once again providing nourishment to moi.


Just about a year ago I made a huge change in my life.  I started smoking in my mid-teens and last March (31st) I stopped!  It was much easier than I imagined and though there are still a few times when I miss it, 98% of the time I never even think about it!  I think I miss the ritual more than the actual smoking (which had begun to annoy me).  I don't feel any different - no more energy, no less coughing (in fact my sinuses are worse!!).  But, I'm happy to be nourishing my lungs and body with fresh air.  (My wallet is a bit happy too - more yarn!!)


My focus now is on food.  I'm moving to a more plant-based diet.  I'm not interested in becoming vegetarian or vegan, but I do want to lose weight and get in shape.  We have always had a healthy diet with lots of fresh produce, but as I've increased in age (ha!) the weight has come on.  Probably a combination of things, but some change has been needed.  Next week I'm meeting with a nutritionist.  I'm pretty knowledgeable about what foods are "good" for you and what ones are "bad," but I'm hoping she can provide me with some tips and tricks that will help me on my journey to becoming a healthier person.


Finally - on the self-care end of things, I am booking a massage for next Saturday or Sunday.  I have not had one since the Fall and I need one (physically and mentally).

  4. You still might find things that change since you stopped smoking. Almost a year after I quit I discovered how much better my sense of smell was. I discovered this because my cat jumped up next to me on the bed and YAWNED vigorously right in my face. Fish Breath to the max; OMG! I never smelled that before! No more of that cat food for you!

  6. Wow.....congrats on the smoking thing!!! I've been after The Mister for ages to ditch his cigar but it's not working. I hear you with the weight thing. I eat exactly what I ate all of my life-mostly small portion vegan/vegetarian and I can't stop the spread no matter how much I sacrifice. It's like my body is changing shape all on its own and I can't stop it. It's terrifying.

  7. Hello, Nourish is a great word. I read mostly mysteries, my favorite. Eating healthy is a great choice, my hubby is diabetic. I try to cook according to his needs, but sometimes he indulges. The massage sounds great, enjoy. Enjoy your day, wishing you a great week ahead.

  9. Congratulations on being smoke free! That's a very hard habit to break! I've never been a smoker (other than the occasional cigar with the boys.)but I've watched a lot of people try and fail. Mom quit when were were kids (I think I was around 7), but Dad didn't quit until my niece was born! (It's 16 years smoke free for him now!). My brother is still smoking, and I'm on him to quit. Dave likes to smoke cigarillos, and he's smoking them a lot more often than I would like him to. He was a cigarette smoker in his teens, and thankfully he hasn't gone back to that!
    Dad said the biggest change he noticed was a better sense of smell and taste after a while.

  10. Bravo on stopping smoking. My DIL has tried sooooo many times and simply cannot stop. It breaks my heart. Happy Mardi Gras! We lived in Louisiana for 5 years and I went into New Orleans twice and and did the whole thing up royale.. lol. So.. I love it. Have a super week! ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  12. I like your word. Nourish. It's so important isn't it? I'm so glad you've stopped smoking. You may not think there are changes, but I KNOW that there are big changes happening inside your lungs and your heart.
    I can relate to the weight thing. I'm struggling too and I never had to really think of it when I was younger. I ate anything and everything and when we got married I weighed 95 lbs and I'm 5'10". I seriously ate like a pig. Ice cream every day and I never gained a pound. Boy, those days are over and done with. I now belong to Weight Watchers! I was doing pretty well with the weight loss until my last medication change. The cardiologist said I would gain weight for awhile, maybe 4-6 weeks, until my body adjusted. Boy, was he right! Oh well. It is what it is. I just keep plugging away.
    I'm glad you're taking charge of yourself and I think more plant based is a very good option.

  14. congrats on quitting smoking and I know you will be successful in nourishing your body. I am trying a salad a day and most days I make it but then there are days when it's impossible.

  15. I love the "whole" approach you're taking to your word! Nourish was mine in 2016, for reasons completely apart from eating. We feed ourselves in so many ways - body, mind, and soul - and finding "food" that sustains, fulfills and grows is a lifelong journey. Yay for finding your way out of the book slump and congratulations on your almost-anniversary of quitting smoking!!
