Unraveled Wednesday 12/18/19

Good Morning!

It's a chilly one out there (about 30 this a.m.), but I think *maybe* the SUN will come out today (fingers crossed).

There hasn't been a whole lot of knitting going on because I've been doing some baking and wrapping gifts, etc.  But, the second sock is now past the heel turn (just barely) and headed to the finish line on the foot:

Someone was trying to help...but without opposable thumbs, I don't think that will work...even though he continually tries.  I would like to wrap this sock up and get back to my shawl knitting which stalled some time ago.  But, no rush...it will happen when it happens.

On the baking front after saying I wasn't going to make a lot of cookies, I've ended up making quite a few:  I made some Christmas Crack (oh my!), oatmeal raisin cookies, chocolate chip cookies - but using espresso chips rather than chocolate chips, anise cookies, pecan crescents and fruitcake cookies (recipe compliments of Nancy from Wyoming Breezes).  I may still make cut-outs depending on time (and inclination - lol).  I did pick up a bunch of raw nuts (pecans, Brazil, almonds, cashews, walnuts) to roast and then coat in EVOO, minced garlic and fresh rosemary.  Luckily I don't consume a lot while baking - for some reason, the whole act of baking and the kitchen filled with delicious fumes is enough for me.

Fletch and I finished reading "Tender is the Night" a few days ago.  Like all of Fitzgerald's novels, the writing is wonderful, but the story is a bit depressing.  It was good to read it again though.  We started reading This Book last night and are enjoying it (Fletch read it years ago, but I never did).  I am about half way through "Dutch House" and I really am liking it a lot.  I do believe my reading slump may be over!!

Linking up with Kat for Unraveled Wednesday.  Head on over to her blog to see what everyone else is making and reading!

  1. Your socks look very Christmasy and that list of cookies makes me wish I had some for breakfast! We received some eggnog bread as a gift, and while I don't like eggnog much, this bread was delicious. Some of my errands today include getting the ingredients to make more so John and I don't have to fight each other for it. You and Fletch read the most interesting books!

I am excited for the Season of Selfish Making to begin! :)

  3. I'm back on track for crafting instead of cooking and wrapping!
The sock is going to be a beautiful pair!

  4. I love hearing what you and Fletch are reading! Tom and I used to read books aloud together all the time . . . but somehow, we stopped. Maybe we should give it a try again! You are a busy baker! I'll bet your house smells wonderful! XO

  6. I hope you like the fruitcake cookies as much as I do. I didn't make any cookies this year, but I'm sure Marilyn did so I won't be cookie-less.

  7. Whatever will you do with all those cookies? That's a ton of baking. And all by yourself! You were busy.

I love Fitzgerald's craft of writing. He was such a master. Every single sentence matters.

  8. I'm feeling the exact same way about my gloves!

Tyg is so handsome! I bet he'd be an excellent helper, if he could knit.

  9. I haven't made any cookies this year but when you mentioned Christmas Crack...well, I may just have to make some of that. It's so wonderful.
I turned both heels yesterday and got the foot done on one. Maybe I'll finish today. It's been awhile since I had a sock finish. Tyg looks like he would REALLY like to help. I remember our George would hold the yarn for me while I knitted/crocheted. Very gently. I sure miss him. Have a great day Vera!
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  10. Lovely sock(s), and I am happy to see someone else has given up the battle to keep the cat off the table. The current cat absolutely refuses to stay off, even though I have a squirt bottle handy at all times to chase her off. Never had a cat so stubborn.

I wish it were 30˚ here; it was -4˚ when I went out to my car at 9:30 this morning.

  11. I made five cookies and that's it for me, it was labor intensive and I'd rather knit instead. LOVE your knitting helper :)

  14. The socks look great, especially with the tablecloth. So glad you have found something enjoyable to read. You certainly have the baking under control. I am with you, the process and the baking smells satisfy me - mostly.

  15. I made molasses cookies, ginger cookies, and oatcakes. My son has requested peppermint whoopie pies— then I’m calling it a day. Hope you have lots of people to share yours with!

I'm so glad to hear that you enjoyed Tender is the Night -- I just got it from the library yesterday! The Dutch House is one of my favorites from this year -- you are reading some great books!!
