Unraveled Wednesday 12/14/22

Hello and Good Morning,

A bit frosty out there, but warmer than yesterday.  Currently (6:42 a.m.) it is 27 degrees.  Yesterday was, unfortunately, spent running around doing various errands.  A trip to CVS ended up being longer than expected:  I was picking up 3 prescriptions for moi, or so I thought.  But one of them was not ready and the reason was that they did not have enough pills to fill the prescription!  Then, dropping off a new prescription for Fletch I learned that our current insurance does not cover it.  The out of pocket cost?  Over $1,000.  YIKES!!  I did not get that filled.  Will try again in the new year and see if our new insurance covers it.  If not...back to the drawing board with his doctor.

Today promises to be more running around.  Karyn comes to clean and will be here by Noon.  At that point, Fletch and I will leave (getting out of her way and avoiding the noise of cleaning - LOL).  We are going out to lunch and then will go to Colin & Mailing's to check on a few things, water the house plants and put the trash out for pick up tomorrow.  A contractor was over doing some work while the kids were in town and now there seems to be a problem with the sink in the basement.  Fletch will check that out...hopefully no major issues.

But on to nicer things.  It's Wednesday, or specifically, Unraveled Wednesday, so let's link up with Kat and her Merry Band of Unravelers to see what everyone is making and reading these days.  You all know that I didn't do any stitching last week, but I did manage to get a bit of knitting accomplished.  The first Turning Leaves sock is off the needles!!

Isn't that just the prettiest?  I had planned to cast on for Sock #2, but that has yet to happen.  It will most likely to to Texas with me.

The second Christmas sock is almost finished:

(Clean and different Christmas tablecloth is on the table!!).  Heading down the foot - about 40 more rows of that and then it will be toe decrease time.  This one WILL be finished before we leave town.

On the reading side, a mixed bag.  I finished The Colony by Audrey Magee.  Not sure how I feel about this one.  I found the writing awkward (though I liked the knitting references) and the story disturbed me (as I guess it should have).  I'm still thinking about it, so there is that!

I returned several books to the library.  This One I started reading, but could not get into.  And Booth I knew I couldn't finish before we take off...and it was due back by 12/22 anyway.  Then I tried The Netanyahus but again I couldn't get into it.  Finally I started Eastern Shore Shorts a book of short stories all taking place on the Eastern Shore (duh), but I'm not finding it very interesting or very well written.  Looks like I may be in another reading slump of sorts.  Oh well, I will find something to take on the plane and we plan to visit Book People our first full day in Austin.  Colin & Mailing have raved about this store, so I cannot wait!

Now it's time to pour a second cup of coffee and dry my hair (my head is COLD!!).  Have a wonderful Wednesday!

  2. That sounds like a busy day for sure, and oh gosh those meds sound expensive, we forget how lucky we are in the UK. Love the socks, pretty and cosy. How exciting to have a new book shop to visit. Take care, stay warm and happy knitting. x

  3. The Colony gave me that same uneasy feeling, and I think that was kind of the point. I also listened to it on audio because it was the only available option from my library, but then I bought a copy so I could reread on paper. I hope you can find something that piques your interest to read on your trip!

    The socks are looking good!

  4. Meds, can be such a hassle, hope you insurance comes through for in 2023. It has been cold and crazy windy here. The 'blizzard' missed us by 20 miles, kinda sad about that, I love a good snow. I too am in a reading slump and how I need a book to get lost in. Safe travels and enjoy your Christmas Season.

  5. I am on the waitlist for The Colony... your review makes me hope that list hurries! I'd love to discuss it with you!

But that Rx sticker shock... yikes! I hope your new insurance works better!

  6. Thumbs down for unsuccessful errands and plumbing problems, but hooray for your beautiful socks! They really are lovely and I'm glad to hear that you've thought about travel knitting. And surely your book slump can be cured at Book People!

  7. Lovely socks, Vera. :-) I felt much the same about The Colony. It was evocative, that's for sure! As far as The Netanyahus . . . I loved it. But I listened to it -- and it's really well-narrated. (Not sure if you'd want to give it a try that way, but thought I'd mention it.) I say this all the time . . . it's a good thing that we don't all enjoy the same books (the world would be awfully boring if we did!). And you're very wise for putting books aside when they're not working for you! XO

  8. The socks are showing a lot of progress. I'm not sure how you are fitting in any knitting with all you have going on. I think I am as excited about your holiday trip as you are. I love the idea of packing up and going off on an adventure. My mom always rented a beach house at the ocean for the family at Christmas and we used to pack up the kids and go to Ocean City for Thanksgiving. I miss those days.

  9. The pill shortage thing has been a problem for me several times, too. Sorry about the cost of your husband's meds--yikes is right! The sock look great and the Christmas ones are very pretty, too.

  12. The socks look great. I'm just about to the heel on knit-along sock #1.

I was in a knitting, reading slump the past two weeks. This week the mojo is back and all is going much better.

  13. I hate those times when nothing is 'sticking', reading wise. Here's hoping you find a good book for the plane. It's getting close!

  14. I am still hoping to get to that new yarn/fiber shop and ask them for help in knitting a sock/cover for the .... (unpleasant word for her amputation) ... stump.

I hear cold weather and s*** is a'coming!!

  15. The cost of prescription drugs is outrageous. I'm hoping it can be worked out in the new year. Your socks are delicious looking - sigh! And I was also a big fan of Book People when I lived in Austin, but it's been so long since I've been there and I'm sure it's even better than it was. Enjoy!

  16. Pharmacy is out of control in this country. My husband is dealing with a similar situation. I love the Christmas socks. That yarn makes such a warm and long-wearing sock - at least for me. The other sock is pretty too.
