Good Morning!
Two days in a row now that the temp when I got out of bed was above freezing! Progress my friends, progress. No signs of crocus leaves (or blooms) or daffodil leaves and buds here, but C&M have crocus blooms at their home (only 20 minutes from us) and my brother and sister-in-law in Delaware have daffodils blooming. It can't be long now!
Who else is finding it hard to believe that we are at the last Wednesday in February? 2025 is flying by (good thing with all the nasty nonsense going on). Let's link up with Kat and her Merry Band of Unravelers to see what everyone is up to in the making and reading worlds.
Believe it or not, sock # 2 is well underway!
Yes, the leg is done and I am ready to knit an Eye of the Partridge heel and do the turn. Then I will book it down the foot to the finish line. I am ready for this pair of socks to be finished!
As for reading I finished The Secret History by Donna Tartt for our RWU group. I did not like the book. I found the characters despicable from the get-go and that did not change throughout the 500+ pages of the book. They just remained nasty. And I didn't like the story. BUT, the writing was so good. Really gorgeous. I'm glad I read it, but I've turned to an easier-to-read book now - kind of a palette cleanser if you will. More about that next week.
I need to get moving and have more coffee. I have an appointment with the audiologist at 9 a.m. (just a routine visit to have my hearing aids checked). If I have the energy (doubtful after a pretty much sleepless night) I may make a Trader Joe's run. And, if I do that, I will visit JoAnn's (in the same strip mall) to see what they have. I found out that after initially saying only some stores would close, it now seems that ALL stores will be closing. Maybe I can find a treasure? JoAnn's was where I always would go for remnants (upholstery material = great tablecloths). This particular store has looked pretty shabby for the last year...low supplies of DMC thread, low supplies of yarn, etc., etc. But, maybe I can find something? And now I wonder where I will find sewing thread or even fabric (I like to see and feel fabric before I buy). Anyway, if not today, then maybe tomorrow for those visits.
Be sure to visit Kat's Blog to see what everyone is doing!
Look at you zooming through that sock! Though with the warmer weather, you may not have much time left in winter to wear the finished pair! We had rain yesterday and are expecting more today, so that should take care of the lingering snow from last week and give us mud, yuck. We're supposed to get a little colder this weekend, but I don't see any snow in the extended forecast, so I'm hoping we're done with it for this winter.
ReplyDeleteI think I read that all the stores would begin clearance sales after the auction/court action settled today, Wednesday. So, maybe tomorrow at the earliest? It's sad because the Joann near me always did really good business and ran several classes. It wasn't one of the ones slated for closure initially.
ReplyDeleteThe Joann closest to me started their clearance sale (20% off) last Saturday, but it was always messy, dirty, and had terrible yarn, and that is still the case, only worse. It is supposed to be far below freezing here Sat. and Sun. nights, but it doesn't look like that will last. Your sock is looking good and you'll very soon have a pair!
ReplyDeleteIt's really sad to see all the JoAnn's stores closing up. Although I rarely shopped there myself, I know many people are distraught over the fact that there will be no local places to purchase fabric. (I'm lucky here because we have a very nice regional fabric store in town; I hope they continue to stay in business . . . ).
ReplyDeletethe socks are so pretty--nice job as you come to a close finish!
ReplyDeleteHope all your errands go swimmingly! I saw some daffodils in bloom here yesterday, which was surprising after a week or so of below freezing temps! I'm going to pull weeds in the veggie garden today so I'll check the temperature there and see if the soil is warming up.
ReplyDeleteThat's a lot of progress on that second sock! I'm really sorry to see Joann's closing. I have so many memories of taking Dad there for his quilting fabric. They also had the best re-usable bags. Perfect for smaller projects. We don't have a single craft store left in the county unless you count Walmart and I NEVER count Walmart.
ReplyDeleteSock is looking good! My pair has seen very little love - I need to buckle down!
ReplyDeletewell I'm not going to read that book! I haven't read anything of hers because I hear mixed things. All the stores are closing that were such a powerhouse back in the day. I feel bad for the sewing community, where do the go???
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to believe all the JoAnn stores will be gone! I mean, they aren't great but they are reliable for sewing supplies. Your are making quick work of that sock.
ReplyDeleteMultiple days above freezing is a very good thing. Secret History is a complicated story. I admire that you stuck with it.
ReplyDeleteI am going to miss JoAnn's. Lately the one here always felt like it was in a shambles and was not staffed well. The sock looks great and I love the Eye of Partridge heel. I just couldn't read Secret History. Lately my reading needs to be a diversion from the real world.
ReplyDeleteYour sock looks great! (soon it will be barefoot season!! WOOO! Haha!) I headed to Joanns this week and it was pretty picked over... Almost all the Gütermann thread was gone! But I did manage to pick up some pearle cotton... black and white mainly, but I did manage to get a new deep red! My big "find" was a full bolt (8 yds) of a mid-weight linen as well as a generous 5 yards of black linen of the same weight. Sadly, no stitching linen... sigh.
ReplyDeleteYour sock is moving right along and will be done quickly. It seems that once the heel turn is done, the foot itself goes fast.
ReplyDeleteMy JoAnns was one that was supposed to stay open and I'm really disappointed that it's now closing too. Like you, I like to feel the yarn and see the actual colors before buying. I have long bought fabric from Good's online because of the great quality fabric and true to color photos, but yarn is different. It's really disappointing.
Blessings,
Betsy
