Unraveled Wednesday 8-1-18

Good Morning!

I woke at 5 a.m. hearing rain gently hitting the roof.  It was so soothing (even though we've really had enough rain already).  I eventually got up and headed downstairs to put the coffee on.  It is mild this morning...and damp...and humid.  It is August (already!) and that pleases me.  I'm not real fond of Summer (especially since I don't/can't go in the sun these days) and Fall is my most favorite season.

The yard is looking very Fall-like:

The lawn is littered with leaves from our apple tree.  I'm sure this is stress (this is the tree that bloomed last Fall - weird) and not a sign of an early Fall.  This morning as I sat on the patio with my coffee a doe came into the yard and after several minutes came to the tree.  She nosed around and found one or two of the small apples that have fallen.  She was close enough that I could hear the crunch of the apple when she chewed!  (They are really messy eaters.)  The black spot on the right is wind chimes and that's Tyg on the bench heading to his favorite spot:

He loves to lay on this table and survey His property - lol.  Always keeping an eye out for Steve (the groundhog), the deer and any mouse or vole foolish enough to show their face.

Garden produce is still coming in strong (onions, green beans, cherry tomatoes and carrots).  We have yet to dig for sweet potatoes.  A couple of volunteer plants have shown up (as usual).  First up a grape tomato plant - the fruit is still all green, but it shouldn't be too long:

And best of all, a volunteer pumpkin vine (which is dying already).  There are 3 pumpkins so far:

Fletch has propped them off the ground so that they (hopefully) won't rot.

On the knitting front...no unraveling this week (also very little knitting).  Here's a shot of the Juniper top - 4" so far, so quite a way to go before I get to the top:

I'm loving the color and the yarn, but I've just been too weary most nights to concentrate enough to knit.  Winter Sea has been blocked and dried.  No glamour shots, but here it is on the back of the chair waiting for a chilly morn or night to drape around my shoulders.  You can see the pattern much better now, I think.

On the reading front, I mentioned Monday that I finished the Essex Serpent which I did enjoy (4 stars).  I'm almost finished White Houses by Amy Bloom.  It's a quick read...not great literature by any means (at times it is almost like a soap opera), but I am enjoying it.  I think the book "Eleanor and Hick" has better reviews, but that was unavailable to me on Overdrive, so I went with White Houses.  True to form, I had about 6 books come through on Overdrive last week.  HA!  I won't be able to read them all within 3 weeks, but I've made a list (again) so that when my reading pile has diminished I can request some again.

Work is work.  I'm very busy - busier than I've been in a long time, which is fine - makes the days go more quickly (but makes it more difficult to concentrate at night as noted above).  Things will iron out.  Both the Lame Duck and the Successor to Lame Duck will be in the office next week for meetings.  Will be interesting.  So far I am managing the Successor's prancing and strutting around like a prima donna.  It's a show for sure!  I'm looking forward to the last week of August when I'll be on Hilton Head Island for the Lame Duck's last hurrah (billed as a meeting, but it's not).  Lots of golf for those who do that...not me - I'll be booking a lovely spa appointment.  We've got dinners planned and perhaps some harbor-hopping around the Island - I'm still in the planning stages for this one.  But, my flights are booked and the contract with the resort has been signed.  It will be fun!

Now, however, I'd best get to work.  Wishing you all a Happy August!

Unraveled Wednesdy 7-11-18

Good Morning!

What a beautiful morning here in Eastern PA.  Fortunately there was no more unraveling on my Winter Sea Shawl and last night it came off the needles right after dinner!

Once again a less than stellar photo of moi...no make up as I had hopped in the shower as soon as I got home from work.  But, I am not the star of this - the shawl is!  I do love it.  It is slightly asymmetrical and though I like the "puffiness" (for lack of a better word) of this unblocked, I will be blocking it to stretch it out just a bit.  I just need to wait for weather that is not so humid.  The yarn is from Green Mountain Spinnery and is called Cotton Comfort - a mix of cotton and wool.  It was a bit scratchy on my lap, but I knit this to use in the fall and winter when I need something to wrap around me on chilly mornings and evenings.  I think it will be perfect.

After weaving in the ends, I set about swatching for my next "big" project:  Juniper Top in the called-for yarn (Berroco Remix Light).  I guess I'm a tight knitter as I need to go up a needle size to get gauge.  I will be ordering needles today (can't believe I don't have them!!).  The yarn is really nice - it knits up very soft and I think it will be extremely comfortable.  I was a bit annoyed when I weighed a skein as it is off by 3 grams!  It shouldn't make a difference, but I've never had a skein of yarn weigh under what it is supposed to - usually the skeins are a bit more than stated.

Teresa had wanted to see a close up of one of the Rose of Sharon blooms.  Before weaving in the ends on the shawl I ran out with my phone, but the flowers had already started closing for the night.  But look what I captured:

Someone having a late dinner!  This morning I ran out again (before my coffee was even ready!!) and managed to get a shot of an open flower.  Teresa - this one's for you!

They really are pretty, and so plentiful.

On the reading front, I'm still in the midst of Enchantress of Numbers which I am enjoying, though finding it a bit slow.  The first third of the book has been all about her childhood and I think it could have been condensed quite a bit.  Hopefully it will pick up soon!

Well, it's Wednesday, so happy Hump Day.  It's also soft pretzel day here in work-land.  And, a busy day ahead for me, so I'd best get on with it.  Hope you all are doing well!

Unraveled Wednesday 06-27-18

Good Morning,

Rather a grey and gloomy day out there this morning - a bit difficult to wake up.

Despite the Lame Duck's appearance in the office yesterday, I was able to escape mid-day.  I drove to a shady location, parked and managed to knit 3 rows on my Winter Sea shawl.  And, my stitch count is spot on!!  Here's a picture from last night:

I managed to knit a bit more after this picture was taken.  The pattern is a 16 row repeat.  I'm in the midst of one of those repeats and then just have two more to do.  I may decide to make it a bit bigger (if my yarn holds out, which it should).

This will be a very cozy shawl.  The yarn is from Green Mountain Spinnery and is a wool/cotton blend.  It's a bit rough on my hands, but I'm loving the way this is turning out.  It will obviously need a good soak and blocking when all is said and done, but I'm very pleased with it.

Not sure if I can get out today to knit.  Wednesday's are typically pretty busy for me and my other boss (not the Lame Duck!!) is coming in - he and Bobby, our CEO, are meeting with some local folks as we may be acquiring another company.

Panel interviews for the Lame Duck's position are being held tomorrow and Friday with a decision by next week.  I think the decision has already been made and that the interviews are just "for show."

OK, time for me to get to work!  Happy Hump Day!!

Sunday's Knitting Update

Hello There!

Greetings from Eastern PA where our roller coaster weather seems to be continuing.  It was so warm yesterday!  75...almost 80 at times.  Today?  It can't get out of the 50's.  I had hoped to get out for a nice walk today, but the clouds keep hiding the sun and it's downright chilly then, so I've been puttering around.

I have a spinach-mushroom lasagna cooking (in the slow cooker) and I have Bridget's Italian Coffee and Walnut Cake in the oven (http://the-ravelld-sleave.blogspot.com/2018/04/recipe-italian-coffee-and-walnut-cake.html) - it smells heavenly.  I can't wait to try it.

Assuming that my re-entry into reality tomorrow (i.e., work) will not be pleasant or care-free, I thought I'd post today with my knitting updates.  As I mentioned, I only worked on the Winter Sea Shawl while we were camping (thank you to everyone who encouraged me to take this along in addition to the socks which never saw the light of day!!).  Here is where it stands (I have not put in any knitting on this since getting back from our vacation).

The repeat is 16 rows and I have another 2 or 3 to knit...maybe more (I have plenty of yarn).  This is a free pattern on Ravelry and very, very easy.  Just knit and purl.  And, it's exactly what I was hoping for (a denser, warmer shawl).  Here's a close up which doesn't look anything like the color of yarn, but you can see the pattern.

As I mentioned, the socks saw no progress, but since we've been home I finished the leg, knit the heel flap, and tuned the heel:

Since this photo was taken this morning, I've picked up the gusset stitches and am starting on the foot.  Won't be long (I hope) before this is finished.  I am hoping to make these identical (which isn't important to me, I just want to try it for once).

Thanks for all yourkind comments on my last post.  We really did have a good vacation despite the various "issues" we encountered.  I even told Fletch that I was ready to go out again (I don't think he thought I would ever go camping again!!).  Unfortunately, work is the reality.  Wish me luck tomorrow for an easy re-entry.

Hope you all are enjoying a great weekend!
