Good Morning!
It's Friday and time to prepare for the weekend. Yay! Our redbud is in full bloom right now and is gorgeous. I see a lot of red buds as I drive through our town. I used to see them along a creek when I would drive to work but...I'm retired! I have not been driving to work for two years now!
On this fine Friday in National Poetry month, I do have a poem to share with you. It's one that my friend Leslie Parker wrote. Leslie and I met when we were 12 and have been best friends ever since - 60 years! How lucky I am to have her as my friend. This poem is one that was published in NC Bards 2025 Anthology and with Leslie's permission I am sharing it with you.
Dandelion
Wishes
sail on a breath,
scatter, take root,
shoot skyward. Yellow
blooms command attention
in envious lawns—
shaggy-headed stems
childish hands pluck,
weave into halos—
before they shrivel
in the sun,
sprout anew.
My mother curls, close-eyed,
breathing slow
and shallow
in a wrinkle of green sheets.
Her hair,
gone to seed, stirs
beneath a breeze
whispering through
the open window,
as if ready,
at long last,
to take to the air.
I hope your weekend brings you much joy. We will be having dinner at C&M's tomorrow night and I know that will bring us joy!

The humble and much aligned Dandelion needs some respect. All winter I was surprised to see them popping up here and there in all that icy cold.
ReplyDeleteLovely poem! Oh my, Leslie makes Dandelion's shine! Have a fantastic weekend! (and please tell Leslie how much I loved the poem!)
ReplyDeleteTwo years! It doesn't seem possible does it? I can't believe it's been five years this month since I drove to Omaha alone to move here. Dennis arrived two months later. Where does the time go?
ReplyDeleteLeslies poem is beautiful and haunting. I have never understood the battle people fight against dandelions. I've always loved them. I hope your weekend is a wonderful one.
Blessings and hugs,
Betsy
What a gorgeous poem! And I adore redbuds. They've been planting a lot of them in the city in recent years, and I love seeing that vibrant purple for the brief period when they're in bloom. Enjoy your weekend!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing Leslie's lovely poem. John hates dandelions and spends far too much time digging them out of the lawn. But I know a secret; I have been known to sail my wishes on a breath. This helps to insure a steady supply of those happy yellow blooms. Hope you have a good weekend!
ReplyDeleteLeslie's poem is beautiful and touching. I have enjoyed the dandelions this year. It's always wonderful to see those bright yellow blooms in the Spring. I love the redbud tree. This year I have enjoyed those bright flowers popping out from the trunk and limbs. Magic indeed.
ReplyDeleteIt will be another week or two before the redbuds bloom here - but things are really getting started now!
ReplyDeleteThe dandelions are awake here in central NY! I loved the poem.
ReplyDeleteLovely poem and lucky to have permission! Your flowering tree is stunning!!
