Hello My Friends,
Well, the Summer Solstice certainly has brought the Summer heat! Whew! The beginning of this week is set to break some records for soaring temps. How was your weekend?
My weekend started Thursday night/Friday morning. I can't really call helping to care for Iris as "work," but you know what I mean. Anyway, I had Friday off. I did some baking in the morning and running errands (primarily restocking wine) and then taking it easy. Fletch and I went over to Colin & Mailing's for dinner that night. We started with some delicious mojitos topped with fresh mint sprigs from the garden. Colin grilled hot and sweet sausage from the farm and we had that with a big salad and fresh sourdough bread. My baking that morning was a blueberry gateau which I took over for dessert.
Topped with whipped cream, it was so yummy! It was a gorgeous evening and we ate outside.
While C&M bathed Iris and got her ready for bed (including story time), I knit a little and Fletch dozed a bit. Then we headed outside for a fire in the pit. (Friday's weather was really beautiful and nice enough to enjoy a fire.). We sat out there until almost 10 p.m. watching bats and fireflies. A gorgeous ending to a lovely day. And a nice way to celebrate the solstice.
Saturday found me catching up on laundry (a great day for drying stuff on the lines) and doing a bit more cooking. And Sunday I managed to clean the bathrooms before it got beastly hot. We had a cold dinner of chicken salad, macaroni salad and pickled veggies. I also cooked some shrimp that we will have for dinner tonight. Sunday morning I saw the doe and her two spotted fawns in our backyard. The little fawns reminded me of colts the way they were almost jumping and kicking up their legs - so joyful!
Today is Colin's first day back to work, so I will be off to take care of Iris earlier than usual and staying longer than usual. Not sure the opportunity will present itself for me, but I will take my book and some knitting just in case.
Wishing you all a beautiful start to the week. Stay cool!
Sounds like a delightful weekend! I know you don't think watching Iris is work, but I'm sure it's demanding and exhausting all the same! My parents have been helping out with my niblings a lot more recently because my brother has been having back issues and can't pick them up. Mainly they're taking them to day care, picking them up, and helping around dinner/bath time, but they are long days.
ReplyDeleteI hope you can stay cool this week -- I can't wait for this heat to be over!
What a perfect weekend! (and those fawns are just adorable!) I hope Colin has a good day back at work! Enjoy your time with sweet Iris and STAY COOL!
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a great weekend! I love your blueberry gateau and the plat you put it on. I hope you and Iris have a great day together and you can both stay cool.
ReplyDeleteIt's hotter than Hades here so most of it was spent indoors for me! I brought the cats in from the catio last night and was amazed by the number of lightning bugs hanging around. The yard was full of them! leaving the leaves etc in the garden over winter really does make a difference!
ReplyDeleteIt's work but not 'work work'. I helped out for three hours yesterday and I was tired but I had fun!!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great weekend! I hope today goes smoothly!
ReplyDeleteYour Friday evening sounds delicious and idyllic, what a great way to welcome the summer solstice! I hope today goes easily for you and that you aren't too exhausted by the time it's done.
ReplyDeleteSending you all the best grandma-juju today, Vera! Stay cool! XO
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like the best kind of weekend. Kids and grandkids. We've had well over 100 for several days but left yesterday with Piper for the Black Hills. We stayed overnight in Mitchell, SD and had rip-roaring thunderstorms all night. We did enjoy listening the the rain on the roof of the camper. It was much, much cooler this morning after the storm and the Hills are supposed to be in the 60's. Hallelujah!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Betsy
Daughter has ice skating camp this week and SIL has to go downtown for meetings so The Mister and I will be taking off tomorrow bright and early for the two hour trip up to sit again. I am NOT looking forward to it in this heat. The idea of being stuck in DC Beltway traffic in this weather is giving me nightmares.
ReplyDeleteHave a great time with Iris, it dounds like a lovely weekend!
