Unraveled Wednesday 11/26/25

 Good Morning My Friends,

It is another gloomy day here in Eastern PA.  Rain is once again in the forecast.  However, it is supposed to be in the mid-sixties today.  Tomorrow is another story - the forecast is only for a high of 41.  We might be once again in roller coaster weather.  But, rain or no rain, it is time to link up with Kat and her Merry Band of Unravelers for the last Unraveled Wednesday of November.

There has been no unraveling here.  In fact, there has been absolutely no knitting.  Oh well, c'est la vie.  I guess the Family Birthday Socks will not be happening - at least not in time for birthday celebrations (which are set for December 6th).  I will get to them, but not this week.  Of course this lack of knitting on my part makes me wonder why I signed up for the 2026 Farmer's Daughter Sock Squad.  LOL

A cowl is still on my mind...something easy perhaps.  I pulled out a skein of yarn to (maybe) cast on.  The color way is "Gold Panning" and it is from Twisted Owl Fiber Studio in Longview, TX.  This was bought at the NJ Sheep and Wool Festival a few years back.  It is 75/25 Merino/Nylon and the label states 100 grams/463 yards.  A steal at $11 for the skein!

Hard to tell in this dark early photograph, but the colors are mostly blues and some white with gold here and there.  If my Mom were still alive, I'd be making something for her since she ended up panning for gold in CA many, many moons ago (when she and her girlfriend biked from Vermont to California in 1941).

BTW, the pillow on the right in the picture is a crewel work pillow that my Mom stitched many years ago.  (The rooster pillow is store bought - I think Home Goods.)

Reading has been pretty slow.  I did finish Three Bags Full the sheep detective story by Leonie Swann.  It was a fun read, but became a bit boring for me.  I did see that there is a second book called "Big Bad Wool" but I think I'll wait a bit before trying that one.

I'm very happy to report though that I am now reading The Antidote by Karen Russell.  This is the book our RWU group will be discussing in January.  I'm loving this book so much!  This is a huge surprise for me since I tried reading this last Spring and could not get into it.  Now?  I'm finding it to be a great read.  Also surprising since magical realism is not one of my favorite genres.  It just seems to be working for me this time around.

A trip to CVS is on my agenda for this morning (prescriptions to pick up) and I'm looking forward to my washer being repaired this afternoon.  Other than that, I plan to just take it easy.  We are going to Mailing's parents for Thanksgiving, but won't be going till late afternoon, so my pie making will be tomorrow morning.  Wishing everyone a tasty and relaxing Thanksgiving.  I'm very thankful for this blogging community.

  1. I hope you do get a cowl or something cast on with that yarn; I'm anxious to see what it looks like knit up. I hope your trip to CVS is a quick one and your washer fix is also quick and easy. I'm so glad you are enjoying The Antidote! I read a NYT article this morning about how to get through big, dense, difficult books because I'm finding it hard going. I hope you have a lovely and delicious Thanksgiving.

  3. I may have to try The Antidote, but everytime I read the description I kind of roll my eyes. Happy pie! I'm pie-ing today.

  4. I'm sitting here with the windows open. It's 70 degrees here and a hot, muddy mess outside. I am so thankful that I'm not having people over. I can't clean in weather like this. I would be a basket case. We're heading up to Daughter's in the morning and she's got a cleaning crew coming in today. It must be nice.

  5. We had rain here all day yesterday, which was miserable, but at least it was on the milder side. Today it's getting chilly -- it's going to be a cold run tomorrow with windchills in the teens! I'm glad to hear you're enjoying The Antidote this time around. It's weird but really compelling, right? I'm going to reread it before our RWU Zoom, and it'll be interesting what I make of it on a second go-round.

I hope you end the day with a working washer. Happy pie making and happy Thanksgiving!

  6. I hope your washer is fixed without any problems! I am currently reading The Antidote and I will finish, but I don't think this was the right time for this book and my state of mind.

  8. So much progress on your Adam and Eve! honestly, the stitched serpent is delightfully (as opposed to scarily sneakily) evil and I love how the piece is coming together. Hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving. also, socks would make a wonderful Valentines Day gift.

  10. Here I am catching up on the blog community. I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. My Mom made quite a few crewel work pillows. She used to by kits and enjoyed the stitching.
