Weekending 5/5/25

Good Morning and Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Our Iris are blooming and they are gorgeous:

I brought some in but they only lasted a couple of days in a vase.

My weekend was good.  I managed to get the chores done that I wanted to do (cleaning bathrooms and doing laundry), but there was plenty of "me time" as well.  I managed to read quite a bit, knit some and stitched some!  Sunday was the perfect day to laze about.  It rained pretty much all day, but it was a steady and gentle rain.  It also brought the temps down a bit which was needed.

Our friends and neighbors, Rob & Eva are going away for 10 days or so and have asked us to keep an eye on their garden.  I was wondering what at this time of year, but it turns out they have a lovely bed of asparagus which needs to be cut daily!!  That will not be a chore! LOL

For two seconds I thought about going to the Maryland Sheep and Wool festival...and then I thought better of it!  I went twice a decade or more ago and that was enough.  Too many people and major traffic jams are not my cup of tea.  Plus, Saturday was very hot and then rain on Sunday.  I was glad to skip it again.

How was your weekend?

  1. I think Maryland had hail storms on Sunday... so a good thing you missed it! I am glad you had a good weekend!

  2. It sounds like a very nice weekend and daily asparagus sounds great! I always feel like I'm missing out on MDS&W but then it turns out that I'm glad to miss traffic, crowds, heat, and hail.

  3. The organizers of the MDSW need to re-examine the whole darn thing. Now that you have to pay $15 to get in, you would think the experience would be better but it's not. It's worse. They need to recognize the popularity of it and have it a 4 or even 5 day event, like a county fair. The retired oldies (me) who are there for the shopping can come during the week and get out of the way of the crowds of families that show up on the weekends just to see sheep and eat fair food. I've been going for more than 30 years and it gets worse every year. It breaks my heart. I have such good memories of it from years past.

  4. Big events like the MDSW is hard as we age--I wish there was something like that here, though! The asparagus sounds great! The irises are stunning!

  5. Oh Irises! I love them so much. Do they smell like the color they are? Do you have lilacs?

  6. Gorgeous irises! I'm sure harvesting fresh asparagus every day will not be a huge chore. I think you picked a good year to skip MDSW; there were torrential rains and hail on Saturday (I saw posts of flooded booths). Molly and I are hoping to go next year, though I'm not looking forward to the crowds. In past years, I'd go with friends and be there when they opened and leave early afternoon before it gets really busy.

  7. Beautiful irises! Mine usually bloom in early June -- can't wait! I read on an IG post that many vendors at MDSW had horrible storm damage -- wet yarn. Ugh! So sad.

  8. Your iris are beautiful. Ours just started to bloom. I picked the first one yesterday because I know there will be more. Fresh asparagus sounds delightful. I used to think I wanted to go to Rhinebeck but honestly the big crowds appeal less and less to me as the years go by.

  9. I'm jealous of your fresh asparagus! Our temps dropped quite a bit yesterday and it's supposed to be rainy off and on all week.

  10. I’m having a good little laugh here, because my eyes red ahead and I thought I was seeing a “Meryl Streep Festival”!!!! Which would be pretty fantastic, too!! Lol’ing still…. :)
Enjoy that asparagus. What a nice way to ‘help out’! Beats checking mail and scooping kitty litter!

  11. I don't like crowds at all and I hate frantic parking, so I don't go to those things. i have a friend that loves to go and loves crowds and loves to sit stand still in a parking lot for an hour to get out. I am assuming you get to eat what you find in the garden!
