Monday Miscellaneous

Hello!

It is pretty stupid hot and humid here.  Heat index is supposed to be 101 or above today.  It is hard to get motivated to do anything.  I don't even feel like knitting at work today!  Last night my hands felt sticky while I was knitting.  It's just not comfortable.  Oh well, nothing I can do about it.  It should break by Wednesday, I think.

Dee and I did get together for a few hours on Saturday which was nice - tea and knitting and lots of chatting.  It was perfect!

The frogs continue to multiply!

There are three visible in the picture above (all on the stone part - the third is at the very top left of the photo) and a fourth one had jumped in the water just as I snapped this picture.

We are finally going to have a fig on our tree!!

I love figs.  Several years ago Fletch bought me a fig plant that was supposed to produce fruit by the time it was a foot high.  That never happened.  And the fig got bigger and bigger and out of control.  It is now over at Colin's home.  Fletch bought another fig this year - one that is winter hardy for our area!  He planted it in front of our vegetable garden and it has done very well.  Last Friday Fletch spotted the beginning of a fig!

Finally, the first of our potatoes from the garden:

We did not plant many and we won't get a lot, but boy were these tasty!  I just boiled them yesterday while a roast was in the oven.  There is something about tasting a potato that you dig out of the earth.  So delicious!

That's all I've got for today.  I hope to do some knitting tonight, but we'll see how that goes.

  1. I have only had dried figs, and fig newtons (which I think are dried figs?). Is there another way to eat them?

  2. It's been hot here during the day too, but at least we don't have the dreaded humidity along with it. And the nights are great for sleeping, down into the 50's. Everyone is talking about fall on their blogs and although the coolness sounds great, I don't want the winter that always follows. It seems like we just finished with snow and cold!
Those potatoes look great. I remember growing my own and how good they tasted.
Have a great Monday Vera and stay cool and hydrated.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  3. It was really humid here yesterday, but it's not too bad today. The weather is definitely doing something weird though because I've been fighting a migraine for two days.

I'm jealous of your potatoes. I want to try growing some next year. I harvested my garlic finally! They are small but they smell sooo good!

  4. I miss my fig tree so much. I started it out in a pot here and then moved it over to my parent's house where it could get more sun. It was so hard to say goodbye when I sold the house. I just went out to Home Goods and bought 2 jars of fig jam last week. I always made jam at Back to School time and it was so wonderful to have enough jars to last all winter.

  5. I agree ... there is just something very rewarding about eating food you grew yourself (or that a friend grew for you .... that's pretty awesome too).

  6. This weather... I am just plain over it! And yay for potatoes! (which do taste incredible when you grow them!)

  7. Enjoying produce from your own garden/yard is THE best! I hope the heatwave breaks soon. I'd be worthless in those hot and humid conditions. Love the frogs.

  8. We had relief from the brutal hot/humid for two days but it is back again...at least we have central air.
The potatoes look delish and the figs, too! It is so satisfying to harvest your own food!

  9. So my friend was mentioning figs or dates ? no Figs. And a bug needs to go into it to ripen so it is not for Vegans. I don't know all the rules, but I guess I'm learning. I only know 2 vegans. They are lovely people who look like they'd break in the wind.

  10. Frogs and figs are a unique combination! I'm so ready for this heat and humidity to end; even the thought of knitting in the air conditioning makes me feel sticky!

  11. Bravo on the frog population explosion.. lol! I wouldn't mind if we had some here but they are few and far between. We've had very nice warm but coolish weather here, thank goodness. Hope it gets better there. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  12. I too love figs and had no idea they will grown in PA. I may be in another house by the time it fruits. I am no longer seeing any of our resident toads and am really upset that the brats may be the reason. Expecting the heat, but didn't get it.

  13. Mmmmmm! There is nothing like fresh-from-the-garden . . . anything! . . . but especially potatoes. Hot here, too. But not THAT hot. I hope your weather breaks soon. XO

  14. Ugh, this heat and humidity. I know some people love it, but I am not one of them.

Hooray for your soon-to-be fig! I hope it makes it.
