Unraveled Wednesday 7-19-17

Well Howdy!

Hard to believe it is already past the mid-mark of July.  Don't hate me, but I am excited for Fall (my most favorite season).  Other than fresh garden produce, I'm not really all that fond of summer - especially since I no longer sun (I did used to be a sun worshiping fool, but no more).  Anyway, past mid-July and here we are mid-week again and time to join Kat and friends for Unraveled Wednesday.  Here's what's been going on in my world.

My cozy blanket is coming along, albeit slowly -- it can't be anything but slow!  But I do now have four squares!

The sampler is progressing nicely.  I finished up the latest dividing band and started in on the next section (still plenty of stitching left on this one):

And...drumroll...I have a finish!  Or a HO as Dee would say (in that it is the first sock of - hopefully - a pair):

This one lonely sock has taken FOREVER to complete (I started it on April 4th!!).  I'm not sure if I just got tired of socks (heaven forbid), or the yarn was bothering me or what.  The pattern is Spring Socks Orla (free on Ravelry) and the yarn is by Black Bunny Fibers (color is Estuary).  The yarn is beautiful and soft, but I found it to be a little bit splitty - I had to really watch it all the time.  I used size 1 needles, and this sock is VERY tight on moi.  My feet aren't particularly fat (at least I think not!!), but I do have an extremely high instep.  At any rate, I think the pair (once complete) will go into the gift pile.  Now I just need to cast on the second one right away.  I thought the yarn and needles were in my bag that I bring to work, but I just discovered they are not.

On the reading front, I finished South of Broad by Pat Conroy and loved it.  His writing is so beautiful (in my opinion).  I have not loved all his books, but I have loved his writing.  I am now in the midst of Britt Marie Was Here by Fredrik Backman (author of A Man Called Ove).  I'm enjoying it, but it hasn't grabbed me like Ove did.  I forgot to look at my Bingo card to see where I am...don't believe I'm at a bingo yet, but I'm having fun with Summer Bingo.

That's it from my world on this HOT July Wednesday.  Hope your week is going well!

  1. Nice work on the blanket-block by block and you will soon have it big enough to snuggle under! The sock is pretty! You do have to wonder why you lose the love for some projects!

  2. Your knitting and stitching is coming along beautifully! I didn't enjoy Prince of Tides years ago and haven't read anything by Pat Conroy since, but I think I might need to (finally) jump on the South of Broad bandwagon. Stay cool (from a fellow fall-lover)!

  3. I'm so glad to hear of another SLOW knitter. I did all my speed knitting last year when I gave four shawls as Christmas gifts, knitting them all in the space of a few months. NEVER AGAIN. I'm not a practiced or even a skilled/good knitter.

The sock looks good, and more importantly, DONE! GOOD JOB!

  4. Ongoing, slow projects are comforting to knit. I enjoy something that I can put down and pick up where I left off easily. Great job on the blanket squares and the single sock. Some of my knit socks go immediately into the gift box, too.

  5. I have a hard time working knit ups if the yarn is splitty. It makes me cuckoo!
Hot humid here too. Summertime! the fireflies are amazing at night!

  6. Britt Marie was a big letdown for me. I finished it and it was okay but didn't have the magic Ove did. Love the sock and the squares. That sampler is going to be a masterpiece!

  7. I just realized you have all s-l-o-w projects ... but each one has intermediate milestones (a block, a sock, a section, a Bingo square) that helps to mark progress . I'd find that incredibly helpful! I certainly don't like summer's heat, but I do enjoy the slower pace and NO SCHOOL BUSES!

  8. Wasn't OVE great! I had to laugh at myself. Every once in awhile I thought ...Oh MY GOSH, I AM OVE!!! LOL

The sock looks great. I've made that pattern before and loved making it.

  9. I like fall . . . but I also like summer. . . so I'll be a happy camper for several months yet! As a fellow high-arch person, I always find "patterned" socks to be too tight (at least . . . hard to pull on), so I usually stick with the tried-and-true, plain old stockinette or ribbed socks and I have much better luck. (Issue there? Dull. . . )

  10. I'm with you! Fall is my most favorite season! Love, Love, Love it! Man Called Ove is on my bingo list as a possible read...I started it over a year ago and have not finished...I may never. Just didn't grab me...no rush, of course...
Sorry your sock's too small but I'm sure someone's feet will be very happy!
    Cheers~

  12. you have a friend wishing for fall as well (me!). I reached my limit this week. I'm trying to hide my true feelings with expressing my snippets of sightings in summer. Socks can be fickle. I was not happy with the last pair I made and gave them to my daughter who has smaller feet.
